Cannot enable hardware acceleration Autocad 2015

Interesting problem. I have two workstations and both seem to have the same problem. Recently (it used to work on both after initial install) I cannot view

point clouds (boxes appear with text that basically say "point clouds are not displayed when hardware accelleration is off"). Problem is I can't enable hardware acelleration (greyed out). Related hardware: MSI GT70 (I7-4940mx, Nvidia GTX880m) also Dell Precision T1700 (Xeon E3-1270, Nvidia K4000). Both have the latest video drivers. I rolled back the driver on the desktop to the earlier certified driver with no effect. About to pull my hair out on this one. Is it a driver issue or an update from windows. Should I have completely uninstalled the current drivers and then install the older "certified" drivers? The K4000 is certified by Autodesk so I feel confident this isn't a hardware issue. Not sure when the problem first appeared because I work mostly with Faro Scene software (laser scanner) and only occasionally import point clouds (via Recap) into Autocad. Any help would be much appreciated. -cp

Hi All,

Has a solution been found for this issue.

With an NVidia K4200 update, AutoCAD 2016 works with hardware acceleration as it always has.

AutoCAD 2017 has hardware acceleration disabled.

Rolling back drivers to Version 358.87 just does not correct the issue.

AutoCAD 2017

Card name: NVIDIA Quadro K4200
Driver version: 10.18.13.5887
Tuning Date: 7/09/2016
Virtual device: gdi13.hdi (Software)

The card and driver does not meet the minimum requirement.

AutoCAD 2016

Card name: NVIDIA Quadro K4200
Driver version: 10.18.13.5887
Tuning Date: 12/01/2016
Virtual device: Dx11 (Hardware)
The card and driver meets the recommended requirement.

Is there a method of 'forcing' the hardware acceleration to ON?

Hi,

>> With an NVidia K4200 update, AutoCAD 2016 works with hardware acceleration as it always has.

>> AutoCAD 2017 has hardware acceleration disabled.

Did you first update the graphic card driver and then install AutoCAD 2017 or first installed AutoCAD 2017 and then updated the driver?

For the second case I had a similar issue ... even more complex. I had AutoCAD, AutoCAD Map 3D and AutoCAD Civil 3D installed. While Civil 3D was able to use hardware acceleration ... AutoCAD and Map 3D did not. Strange anyways, because they use the same ACAD.EXE and the same components like e.g. the drv-folder.

My only working solution was to do a clean uninstall of all AutoCAD 2017 based products, then update the graphic card driver with option "new installation" and then reinstall the 2017 products.

Everything has been running fine, Building Design Suite Premium 2016 and 2017, until I updated the NVidia driver last night.

It looks like it will be a weekend job to get it corrected.

Thanks for your response.

I really wish Autodesk and the third party developers (in this case NVidia) would get their act together. Is anyone on either side addressing this issue? HELLO?? Apparently the video driver updates are the culprits and the only solution is a re-install of the "offended" program. I had the same issue with

AutoCAD 2015 and re-installed and have not updated the video drivers since. I believe this is the only solution available. Unless there is a compelling reason to update the video drivers, I would update to the latest driver and then re-install the program(s) and be done with any further video updates until such time as Autodesk provides a hotfix or service pack. If you're like me, you like to stay updated across the board but that's just not very practical as your finding out. It's kind of a hard to swallow when you know the hardware IS compatible. They used to issue AutoCAD only performance drivers for the quadro line, but most the GTX line will perform admirably with Autodesk products. I had two workstations with the same issue, one with a K4000 and one with a GTX880.  -Chris

I also have Revit LT Suite installed on this same computer.

AutoCAD LT 2017 has hardware acceleration.

AutoCAD Architecture 2017 is fine, AutoCAD MEP 2017 is fine.

Revit 2017 and Revit LT 2017 are fine.

AutoCAD 2017 is the only one that shows the issue.

It is very odd.

Yes, quite similar to my situation.

Hi,

>> I really wish Autodesk and the third party developers (in this case NVidia) would get their act together.

I guess if you only have the nVidia drivers and AutoCAD installed you won't have conflicts.

The systems nowadays have so many applications/tools/addon's/antivirus/internet-browser and plugins installed, every app installs another C++ redist release plus services plus other drivers (you also have some USB devices) and that's more complex as it looks like from outside.

I was also disappointed about the situation that I had to do a clean uninstall and reinstall, but I don't know if it's Autodesk, nVidia or any of the other applications which made that happen.

>> AutoCAD 2015 and re-installed and have not updated the video drivers since. I believe this is the only solution available

Yep, when a system is running fine, there is no need to update anything (besides of some security reasons like antivirus update).

When you install another driver for your graphic card the system will not be twice as fast (therefor you need a new gc, not just a driver), so you can stay as long as it is working well.

It is good to see that I'm not the only one with this problem. Mine is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970. At the moment I have not enough time to reinstall everything. I will see if this will fix the problem for me.

Hi @Anonymous,

It seems the solution to correct this (so far - still researching) is to uninstall AutoCAD, update your video drivers and then reinstall AutoCAD.  Luckily this is a fairly quick process. Please let me know if this is something you can try to resolve the issue.

Please select the Accept as Solution button if my post solves your issue or answers your question.

Yes that is what I was reading also.

Although that may be a solution, I cannot simply reinstall AutoCAD.

This is company that controls all product installations.

If I UNINSTALL AutoCAD, which I would assume preceded the ReInstall AutoCAD, then I have to access IT.

Anything else which resolves it?  I already got the latest driver from HP for this Z840.

That did nothing at all. Still cannot enable hardware acceleration.

Someone said in one post, that reinstalling AutoCAD does not reveal the real problem.

Well we need to find out how to solve it without that uninstall/reinstall procedure.

Thanks for your reply.

Hi @Anonymous,

Is your IT group that scary? :cara_con_una_leve_sonrisa: I recently had to remove 23 Autodesk applications and reinstall and it only took about 2 hours including all the updates afterwards.

At any rate, here is an AKN Article that details other options but are much more involved.

Are you running Windows 10 (assuming this is a newer laptop)? Have you applied the hotfixes and Service Pack for AutoCAD 2015?

Hi,

welcome @Anonymous.autodesk.com!

I don't know a reg-key that controls the setting of hardware acceleration on or off, a short search was not successful, sorry.

In www I have found 2 articles, but both don't look like I would trust them >>>article 1<<<, >>>article 2<<<

BUT ... I doubt that a solution for many computers is that all have to work without hardware acceleration. I would spend more time in graphic card and driver to get it running with hardware acceleration.

Hello,

I'm using AutoCAD 2017 on PC with GTX 1070.

I got the same problem yesterday. Using of certified drivers does not fix it and simple re-installation of drivers or / and AutoCAD does not fix it.

Today I made below mentioned:

1) Uninstall Autocad.

2) Remove Autocad folder. Re-start PC.

3) Use CCleaner to clean Windows registry several times one-by-one). Re-start PC.

4) Uninstall GPU drivers. Re-start PC.

5) Check GPU drivers - they must be standard Microsoft drivers (not Nvidia or else).

6) Install GPU drivers (I used latest one (non-certified by Autodesk :cara_guiñando_un_ojo: ).

7) Install AutoCAD.

And hardware acceleration works from first start without any problem. I hope that it should help you also.

I had the same problem with Autocad Civil 3D 2017 but not with Autocad Map 2017.

The issue ocured after using "Reset settings to default".

I fixed it by copying these registry values from the correctly working Map to the malfunctioning Civil:

Use at own risk...

Hi Raymarcher.

Thank you for the findings.

It will be well worth the while if the problem ever happens again.

Regards,

Barry.
