Can I Disable Layer state dropdown..... it's "buggy"

Wondering if there is a way to disable this and force myself to go directly to the layer states manager. When I inadvertenly scroll through the layer states it sometimes selects one that I hover over. Also, when I assign a layer state from the dropdown it also does some crazy things like layers don't refresh etc. Everything always seems to work as expected from the manager but definitely not from the pull down!

Just to make sure I'm not missing something that's related to this....

I have a layer state  created for the paperspace view. NOT when you actually go into a viewport..... but for the sheet setup. I'm diligently trying to get rid of any overrides to my paperspace viewport layerstates that are not intended. Want to have the layer state itself control the views.... otherwise why have the layer state.

Anyway, so I have my layer state for the sheet setup and the idea is I assign it to each layout tab without going into a viewport. Works for the most part. BUT, even after I assign the layer state in some instances there are still overrides showing up in the view (I have my layers set up to show the overrides by hilighting blue). Can't figure out what is going on. Sometimes it feels like a graphics problem because sometimes when I close out of the drawing and reopen the issue goes away. Sometimes when I switch tabs and return it goes away.

Really just looking to see if anyone else has experienced this and may have a handle on whether this is operator error or another issue.

That being

Meant to mention this....

If I open a tab and assign the layer state the overides still show up. If I clear all overrides for the tab then reassign the layer state the overrides remain off....

If I switch to another tab that I previously assigned the layer state to the overides are still gone and looks like what would be expected.

So, I guess the big question is why would overrides "stick" even if I assign a layer state to the paperspace layout (again NOT inside the viewport).

@payingtoomuch Can you share screenshots of your ABOUT and GRAPHICSCONFIG command pop-ups from inside your AutoCAD too please.

it appears you are fighting (perhaps not unaware of) and not fully using this sidebar set of options from layerstates popup

#1 is why you cannot control on/off layer settings

#2 may be adding to your overrides challenges

Would love to get hold of your DWG file if you can share.

Your 2020 is not current too

Pendean.

I went through a HUGE layer states learning curve awhile back. Had major issues with some things and almost bailed. Some of the settings I chose for various reasons and unfortunately I can't really remember why.... but whatever I did I finally got to where I could use it effectively.

Now that being said, I'm not opposed to rethinking some of this stuff.

A couple of questions.

1. Why would the layer properties to restore tick boxes be greyed back and selected? I take it that that is not normal?

2. The number 2 callout you provided. That is one of the things I'm remembering was giving me so much grief. When I deselected it that's when things started working for me..... or at least made things more intuitive as to how the changes were taking place. Had something to do with that I typically just freeze/ thaw rather than on/off. It's another reason that I don't go into changing the layer states through the layer states manager/ editor. BUT as I look at it as we're talking I see they have off and freeze there as well. Typically I just work in layers in the viewport and update the layer state. More intuitive to me.

3. Wondering what the apply properties as viewport overrides is doing to me. Not following that and wondering now if I should "play with that some?

Not trying to be difficult but I've been working on this "template" for quite some time for a client of mine. Just don't feel right about sharing too much since he's paying me to pull it all together.

The updated release apparently is not an option to me. I've been down this path before and have tried to update but apparently I waited to long to update and my ability to update was "disabled" by autodesk. Bummer.

Here's some more information that might be important.

Maybe I have a misconception or two still.....

The way I've been thinking about this and trying to make it work.

I have a template drawing that I have all my layer states set up in. I export these layer states to an .las file. Want to be able to use those layer states in other drawings as new layer states for a particular drawing or to update layer states that are already being used in a particular drawing.

So the process is

1. Export layer states out of the template

2. Import layer states into another drawing.... thereby overwriting the original layer state with the same name.

3. Open the individual layout tabs, click inside the viewport and assign the "updated" layer state.

4. The thinking went that if there are no overides in the template or in the drawing I'm tryig to apply the new layer states to, that when I assigned the newly imported layer state to the viewport, that I wouldn't have any overides visible because I'm overriding everything with the new layer state.

5. BUT, that is not the case. If I assign the new layer state to the viewport, it appears that whatever is different between the original layer state than the new layer state is still showing up as an override. Even if I remove those overrides and then reassign the new layer state to the viewport it is still showing up as overrides. It's as though the viewport is remembering it's old layer settings and wants to tell me what the new layer state is changing..... I don't get it. Can't be as intended. Can it?
