start command _UNITS and set your drawing untis to "meter" and draw all objects in meters, then all measured objects show squaremeter as result.
At least, AutoCAD works with it's internal units, if you draw square with 10x10 units, AutoCAD will report 100 as it's area. If that are mm² or m² is up to you.
When you are using fields you have the additional choice to have a multiplicator assigned, that makes it possible to draw in mm and measure in m.

What if you export to some other CAD program, is it still "up to you"?
I think I would use the -dwgunits command to set document units (not sure if this existed in 2010, 11, 12).

It depends on how the other program works, some are using the units-setting, some are ignoring that completely and take inch or millimeter as default 😉

I always see this advice being given but I don't think you understand the true solution to these inquiries for Vanilla AutoCAD.
-DWGUNITS is a sysvar that is used in Autodesk vertical applications like Land Desktop Development (LDD).
It basically does for the vertical apps what INSUNITS does in plain vanilla AutoCAD.
If a drawing was created using a vertical app like LDD, however the -DWGUNITS was set takes precedence over how INSUNITS is/was set in plain vanilla AutoCAD. Therefore, no matter what you set your INSUNITS at, the setting for -DWGUNITS will mess things up on you.
The commands to use for this type of inquiry, are as below:
Sets linear units.
Sets the display precision for linear units and coordinates.
Controls whether a drawing you start from scratch uses imperial or metric default settings.
Controls whether the current drawing uses imperial or metric hatch pattern and linetype files.
Controls the display format for units.
To change units in a drawing follow these:
All objects in the drawing are selected for scaling.
Scaling will be relative to the world coordinate system origin and the location of the drawing origin will remain at the WCS origin.
All objects in the drawing are now 2.54 times larger, corresponding to the equivalent distance in centimeters.
