CAD files are being automatically write protected when saved

Hello

I was hoping someone could help me with getting my computer to stop write protecting AutoCAD files. They are stored in a company wide folder system so we can open from any computer. However, when I open them on mine and save them, my computer automatically takes ownership of said files, then when another computer tries to open them, they can only be opened 'read only.' Once I have ownership, I know how to allow others to modify, but I don't need to be the owner of these files in the first place. Does anyone know why this happens or how to fix it?

@KaitlinUlrich What does your IT person explain for "...my computer automatically takes ownership of said files...", that's a very generic term that needs clarification please.

FYI File locking and write-protection are OS functions: in AutoCAD, if you open a file the OS reads that flag, and others trying to edit your file can only do so in READ-ONLY mode.
UNLESS you open that file in READ-ONLY mode, then one other person can open and edit that file (but no one else).
AutoCAD by design has no ability to allow multiple users to edit one single DWG file at the very same instance. Sorry.

No, it says this when no one else has the file open. I don't have this problem with any other software. Under file properties, it tells who the owner is. Before I open a file on my computer, the company is the owner, after, it grants me ownership, which is causing problems for everyone.

Thanks for the extra information @KaitlinUlrich

From your descriptions to date, this remains an I.T. issue either with your own login or a configuration/setting on the server. Nothing that can be fixed in the program as AutoCAD gave up File Locking Controls a very long time ago now.

Reach out to an I.T. specialist in your company for help.
