Please fix this bug in the core program, it is present since a long time/versions.
(example of tested version AutoCAD 2013 - 2020, English and German)
[first bug]
ACAD searchs for plotstyletable(?), even if the plotstyletable is set to <None>[second bug] - which would be fixed by fixing the first bug.
and runs into errors if in the same folder are another DWG with name "NONE.... .dwg" (not casesensitive)
I don't know why DWG, i guess the program want to find *.ctb or *.stb, but this is not my job to know it 😉
ISSUE:
Open a file with modelspace pagesetup set to plotstyletable = <None>
For Users of German versions = <Keine>
For Users of French versions = <Aucune> (untested)
and when in the same folder another DWG exists with filename who starts with "NONE*.dwg"
For Users of German versions = "Keine*.dwg"
For Users of French versions = "Aucune*.dwg" (untested)
and so on
You get one (ore more) errors:
Alert: "Unrecognized version and cannot be read" / GER: unbekannte Version; kann nicht gelesen werden
another additional alert is also possible, perhaps depend of the file content of the "None..dwg" file, i didn't test it further.
Alert: “is not recognized syntax, select OK to ignore or Cancel to abort
Maybe I have not recognized all dependencies yet, therefore I attach a simple example.
The files were created in AutoCAD2013 without a template, fresh new files just with one pline/circle.
Extract the Zip, open the 'OpenThisFile.dwg'
Please let me know if you get no error message, write down your Product&version, THX.
Acad-version , File-version and File-content is not important (except the pagesetup of Model pagesetup).
It sounds like an easteregg, but it isn't.
What i already found in www about "unrecognized version and can not read" but
I suspect these answers all point to the same problem and are not another cause,
so it isn't a real solution, just a bypass.
a) The Plot Stamp function refers a corrupted or illegal version of a .PSS file.
Delete the reference or replace the complaining PSS file.
https://www.cadforum.cz/cadforum_en/qaID.asp?tip=3548
b) it’s likely a corrupt CTB/STB file or path
http://www.darrenjyoung.com/2019/02/01/autocad-error-unrecognized-version-and-cannot-be-read/
https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-forum/autocad-error-message-unrecognized-version-and-cannot-b...
So i guess it is all related to the described problem above.
What the heck is Acad searching for whenn the plotstyle ist set to <none>?
and why does this routine read DWG files?
and why does the routine crashs on DWGs with names which begins with "NONE"
Thank you <Ask> for the entertainment again, even after so many years it will not be boring.
I know you're already aware of this, but it sounds like a job for...
Hi,
Lately even I am getting the same error "Unrecognized version and cannot read". Never had this issue earlier and this problem occurs only when I open the drawing which I download from this forum, and its kind of crazy. I am using AutoCAD 2018 and tried to open the drawing in another system which is installed with AutoCAD 2020 and I didn't get this error. I did think of posting the same in the forum If I continue to get the same error, as its very annoying.
1 . Others can not read in support cases, so they can not learn and experience the "solution".
2. THIS WAY is the only way for me to open a support case!
(As an ExpertElite member, I can report my own thread as a support case)
Back to topic: Could you test the problem?
thx

My files are not Crazy, these files are the cleanest you ever had from the Forum 😉
AutoCAD, NEW, right of the [Open]-Button, open the smal menu ther and select "Without template - metric" (or british, what you like)
EDIT:
You posted your Version, why? Doesn't this message appears if you open my file??
Only then (message not appears) it is nice to know what version is used. Thx
I get the error message (see attached)
after clicking OK, the file seems to behave as a "normal" dwg- definitely weird.
(plain vanilla) AutoCAD 2020.1
Win10Pro version 1903, build 18362.356
It isn't file and not version related as i wrote.
To see the alert in this situation i normal as i wrote and explained, but a bug.
Just not seeing the the alert would be interesting.
Thank you for the answer.
Hi @cadffm
Alan
Only as a supplement for other readers.
ACAD is looking for something with the name at the beginning, it doesn't matter what the name is further,
the file extension doesn't matter either, it could also be a folder name "NONEholy"
(the error message is slightly different for folders).
2021.1 still a problem
Hi CADffm,
I have logged the information from your recent post regarding AutoCAD 2021.1.
In the past, this was not consistently reproducible. But it seems to be the case now. I hope this new information helps identifying the cause of it!
I am wondering how to avoid this for you and for other users out there to not get into this issue, and want to collect the workflows below:
At the end, I think this was not discovered long time ago due to the rare case of naming a folder or a DWG file with “NONE”. I am wondering how such folders get created in the first place!
I am glad that Windows uses “New Folder” for creating a folder rather than “NONE” 😊
Best,
>"I am glad that Windows uses “New Folder” for creating a folder rather than “NONE”"
LOL, i am sure this problem would be solved for a long time if windows uses "NONENAME" for a ne FILE(!) or folder.
