Basic Work flow

I am a Noobie and am having a big fight with AutoCAD.

 

I want to draw out some basic office shelfs that I am trying to build.

I have Wall bracket railings about an inch square and of varying lengths: 47.5, 30.5, & 25"

I have 4 different sizes of shelf brackets (one bracket at each end): 7", 11.5", 13", & 20.5" deep

 

I have a bunch of lumber

30"L x 6"W x 3/4" H

42"L x 6"W x 3/4" H

42"L x 3"W x 3/4" H

30"L x 1.5"W x 3/4" H

 

I can use any length of the lumber but I want to keep things symmetric: 42/2=21, 42/3=14, 42/4=10.5 and not waste any lumber.  The depth of the shelfs will be fastened together so by the 1.5" slats extending just the left and right edges of the shelf.

 

I want to draft a simple parametric drawing that lays out what I can do.

 

I can't seem to keep rectangles to stay rectangles, I can't get 3D cubes to align by the faces of each other or set measurements from edges using the parametics, its only 2D...

 

I played with trying to make blocks out of my parts but they would not insert right.

I also can't constrain a block to a length....

 

 

Any help on this simple project would be useful, I am considering going to powerpoint!

After I got super frustrated with this I realized my error

 

Studs, I have to put the Shelf bracket bars on studs!  So I found them using magnets, way better than an electric stud finder!

 

then I spaced my bars out and then well screw AutoCad!  I will just build and see what happens...
