AutocadMECH model/drawing to Revit workflow questions

I am doing research for an upcoming project that required Revit coordination. Previously we worked in Rhino 3d but currently switching to Inventor / Autocad Mechanical platform.

We are learning Inventor for fabrication models and drawings, and what we want to do is use Autocad to produce items for larger buildings and do the submittals in Autocad, but the fabrication drawings in Inventor. These models also have to work in a Revid model for coordination with MEP trades.

1) What is the best work flow to coordinate with Revit? (Purchasing Revit is not on the cards right now).

2) How can I associate material part number with a 3d object in Autocad?

3) Can I export from Autocad for BIM coordination?

Cheers

  1. One potential workflow for coordinating with Revit without purchasing Revit would be to export your AutoCAD models to a file format that can be imported into Revit, such as a DWG or DXF file. You can then use the "Link CAD" tool in Revit to bring in your AutoCAD models and use them for coordination with MEP trades. Alternatively, you could also consider using a third-party BIM coordination software that is compatible with both AutoCAD and Revit, such as Navisworks or Solibri Model Checker.

  2. To associate material part numbers with 3D objects in AutoCAD, you can use the "Material" property of an object. You can set the Material property for an object using the "Properties" palette or by using the "MAT" command.

  3. Yes, you can export your AutoCAD models for BIM coordination. You can do this by saving your models to a file format that is compatible with BIM software, such as DWG or DXF. You can then use the "Export" or "Save As" command in AutoCAD to save your models in the appropriate file format. Some versions of AutoCAD also have specific BIM export options, such as the "Export to BIM 360" command, which allows you to export your models directly to the BIM 360 platform.
