AutoCAD Viewer to Accurately Measure Materials

AutoCAD Viewer to Accurately Measure Materials

Hello AutoCAD community!

Does anyone know of a product made by AutoCAD that is free and doesn't require a license to measure curves in various surfaces for both AutoCAD 2019 / Inventor 2019? I have a person in our costing department that needs help measuring curved materials. Sadly, he has informed me that the DWG and Inventor View 2019 products do not offer this capability. My company is migrating over to AutoCAD 2019 and he needs something to use other than a full network license key that may or may not be available to him at various times depending on demand. To the best of my understanding the LT or "Light" version of AutoCAD/Inventor has been discontinued; therefore, this may no longer be an option.

I appreciate your help!

Thanks,

Bran

Is he saying autocad trueview won't do what he needs? I don't believe autocad LT is being discontinued.

Hello gotphish001,

Correct he has informed me that the DWG True View 2019 and Inventor View 2019 cannot give him the exact measurement of a curved piece of material. He has informed me and showed me that he can only make a straight line from one point to another using both DWG True View and Inventor View 2019.

I'll need to meet up with my license vendor as they mentioned LT is being discontinued; however, I have not heard of this either. The "LT" version would probably be the best alterative correct? Can you think of any other potential solution?

Thanks,

Brian

Hi @Anonymous,

There are a variety of viewers that are available from Autodesk.

AutoCAD LT is also a possibility ans can be used on as short of a period as a month.  Can you provide a sample file or files and explain what measurements you are trying to capture? I would be happy to explore which products might work in this process for you.

Are you working with Inventor files as well or just AutoCAD DWG files?

Good Afternoon @john.vellek !

Thank you for your reply. Please see the attached document. If we would use the DWG or Inventor Viewers mentioned we can get a straight line around those curves, but we could not measure the exact curve. We are in the furniture industry so we need to accurately account billing material costs.

We will be working with AutoCAD 2019 and Inventor 2019 files.

I appreciate your help @john.vellek!

Sincerely,

Brian

Hi @Anonymous,

I played with a variety of viewers and I don't feel as they are going to work well enough in this process for you.

For instance, the furniture in the drawings are blocks and consist of solids. Without exploding the block, the viewers cannot readily obtain the geometric information in a useful way.

Of course on a simple round top, a straight dimension will give you a radius. This will not work on the elliptical solid of the longer conference table.

Since this collection of blocks is in 3D I suspect that even AutoCAD LT will not suffice as it is really intended to work with 2D information.

Now I did try Fusion 360 with your file and it does handle all the geometry quite well so that might be a consideration if the cost is low enough for you. You might grab a a free 30-day trial to see if it does what you are seeking.

Another option on the Inventor side of this equation might include the free Inventor View application.

AutoCAD LT (Autodesk's hottest seller) is not going anywhere and will most likely meet your needs for DWG files measurements.
Inventor LT will most likely address your needs with native INVENTOR files; I don't know if this is the "LT" your reseller is talking about being discontinued or not.

It might be best if you download 30-day trials of both for your costing dept person to use and you all confirm it meets with your own business requirements.

Hi @john.vellek !

Thanks for looking at this for me.

We have had our end user use the Inventor View 2019 application already for the Inventor side of things.

I will trial out Fusion 360! I have heard a few things about this software, but I haven't seen it in use yet.

Thanks for diving into the project file to see what we typically work with.

Sincerely,

Brian

Hi @john.vellek !

Thanks again for all of your help. We are still having the end-user demo both the LT version and our normal (typical) full version AutoCAD/Inventor 2019 licensing. I am waiting for him to get back with me on everything. He mentioned that some of the Fusion 360 stuff didn't appeal to him (various reasons). In addition to this Fusion 360 would be another license we'd have to add in subscription beyond our usual IT wise as well. I appreciate you along with others bringing the Fusion 360 application to my attention.

I will continue to keep you posted.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Brian
