Autocad unexpectedly treating two touching lines as one

All:

Lately, when I use object snap to connect two lines, AutoCAD treats the two lines as one object when moving or stretching.  I assume there is a simple setting to turn this off.  Can anyone please help? It is driving me somewhat crazy.  Thanks for the help.

Thanks.  That fixes it, but how do I keep it from happening in the first place?
