AutoCAD - Temp File location when server is full?

We had some server issues yesterday and access was unknowingly lost.

I happened to notice at one point that my file was saving to a temp location. This scared the crap out of me so I quickly resaved it to my C drive. I believe after saving to my C drive the file in the temp location was removed so I can't find that location now.

Others in the company did not notice the issue until this morning and the files they were working on do not exist on the server anymore. Obviously, they have the .bak's and .sv$'s but I assume they would have saved to a local temp folder similar to my initial scenario?

My question is, in this case where should the temp file location be? I would have assumed it would be where the "Temporary Drawing File Location" is set to under Options > Files but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Does anybody know for certain where we can look for the missing files?

@rspearYL2SX AutoCAD has always dropped the autosave "temp" files in a user's login %TEMP% folder for decades now, unless you specifically direct it to go elsewhere in OPTIONS command's FILES tab. It's sort of a safety from crashes feature if you've never turned off autosave and BAK file creation of course.

HELP inside the program will explain what to seek out and where to find it if your some reason you need to recover files on your own PC/Laptop, here is a link to it

As for files on the server, that's for your IT folks to help you find.

Sorry if I didn't explain correctly...

We have the autosaves. What happened with the files (.dwg's) that were open when the server became full was they were saved to a temp location. This was communicated in Civil 3D via command line but most users didn't notice and kept working.

What I'm asking is, in that scenario where would Autocad default to?

I would have assumed it would be the Temp dwg location as shown in my screenshot but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Typically, when the temp message appears, it is still saving them in the original location, it is just failing to rename the random letter.tmp to the actual drawing name.dwg. have you checked your server folder location for tmp files?  Renaming them to .dwg will allow you to access them, if you dont know what file is what, you may need to open them to learn what their drawing name.dwg should be.

Ok thanks for the clarification. No tmp's on the server.

We didn't lose much obviously but it's more time consuming trying to figure out what was actually lost.

Hi,

@rspearYL2SX
It's good to tell if you know about MOVEBAK command. The MOVEBAK command is an AutoCAD Express Tool designed to manage the location of backup (.bak) files. It allows you to redirect the .bak files created during every save operation to a specific folder, preventing them from cluttering the same directory as your drawing files. >> Click <<
Hopefully this helps!
