AutoCAD point cloud issue with live section objects

AutoCAD point cloud issue with live section objects

Hi there,

I have been using recap imported point clouds to generate drawings for the past couple of years and have recently come accross a few issues which is starting to frustrate the workflow so here I am hoping someone can help.

Scenario:

I import a point cloud, create square ucs to the object, create live slice section through the point cloud and start to draw.

When I zoom in and out i can see the point cloud getting distorted see attached pics 1 & 3 at different zoom (please note the polyline hasn't moved).

the polylines get distorted from time to time also where i see the grips are far away from the vertex see pic 4

So far I have narrowed it down to the visual styles.

2D wireframe - fixes the polyline distortion but not usefull as point cloud isn't visible

3D wireframe - gives me the above 2 problem

All other visual styles except Hidden- does the above + additional problem below

Hidden - fixes the above 2 but behaves below.

In the Hidden visual style the above 2 problem goes away however it creates a selection issue where the section object always gets selected and all drawn elements are not selectable unless I select all which won't help with the modifying side of things.

If anyone can advise I'd be most grateful

FYI - I'm using Autocad 2017.1.2, graphics card driver is up to date etc. Tried different hardware acceleration settings to no luck.

Hi @Anonymous,

I will try this on my end with one of our sample point clouds. If you would like to send me your specific one that would be great too.

In the mean time, have you tried totally disabling Hardware Acceleratoin to see if that makes any difference?

Hi @Anonymous,

I did this with a medium size point cloud. I kept my Visual style as Wireframe. I was unable to see any of the issues you describe.

Perhaps the behavior you are seeing is related to your graphics hardware. What is your graphics card make and model?

Hi John

I can't turn off hardware acceleration because it will disable working with point cloud.

The Graphics card is a Nvidia GTX 980 Ti,

I have tried the sample on 2 other PCs (1 is a different spec) now and it does occurr the same with the same and different point clouds.

And this seems to only occurr when viewing from front, sides and back. Top view only distorts the polyline by a tad which is bearrable (see pic of grip behaviour of polyline) viewing from top view, point cloud doesn't seem to move but the polyline seems to have a ghost line and the square grip is distorted

Interesting enough though after playing around with this, it does not happen in autocad architecture eventhough the format is similar nor Revit but thats a different software base pogramme altogether.

I like to believe that its not hardware since I tried on other PCs and software types but I'm no hardware specialist so I can't tell for sure.

But please note our point clouds range from 5 to 50gb. The sampled point clouds are 9gb 12gb and 18gb (used in screenshot) respectively.

So not too sure why Autocad is behaving that way.

Oh and I tried seeing what the difference on the Tuner log on both architecture and autocad's graphics performance is.

I tried matching autocad to do the same but architecture seems to have Dx11 turned off which I can't seem to do on CAD so I couldn't see if that solved the problem or not.

HI @Anonymous,

If you are unable to turn on the DirectX 11 in AutoCAD, that means that you are not using a graphics card/driver that supports it in AutoCAD.

Can you send me a screen capture of your GRAPHICSCONFIG window?

I think you need to verify that you have the most current driver for your graphics card. This card is not on the recommended/certified list which is likely the root cause of why you are experiencing these issues.

Hi John,

It is utilising the DX11 in autocad (the one that is causing the issue) just Autocad architecture (which wasn't turned on but available) didn't have the issues mentioned in the posts. See attached screenshot.

HI @Anonymous,

Other than checking for a more current driver, you might consider using DirectX9 to see if that makes a difference.

Hi John,

After messing around with this for a while I think I have narrowed down the issues.

Though it isn't a complete solution I think i managed to get around this and help with the workflow.

- Polyline grips and "ghost lines" that was displayed as per screenshots previously when selected.

I never noticed this but I believe this is always been like this after testing on 4 different machines with different autocads.

# 1 Visual styles

I always work with 2d wireframe most of the time which doesn't display the issue. When you switch to any other visual styles (for drafting with recap for example) however and zoom right in the issue occurs. (see SS attached)

#2 drawing units

This is further disrupted if you're like me in the surveyor engineering industry and usually draw in metres.

As far as the point cloud is concerned my only work around for now is to 1- draw in mm and 2- unify a RCS file to draft from.

Could you see if the screenshot is the same for you or anyone else viewing this post?

Hi @Anonymous,

I'm glad you found ways to work around the issue. On my computer changing the VS didn't seem to make much of a difference. I can certainly understand how it might do so for some graphics cards.

Thanks for the contribution! I will mark you post as a solution as it might help other Community members with a workaround for the strange display behavior.
