Autocad not responding

Autocad not responding

Every time I'm working on a project all of a sudden Autocad stops working. The program freezes without any warning, not  even allowing me to restart my pc. From what I see on the Task Manager, it's not my computer's problem but the program that "stops responding".

Moreover, even though it's supposed to autosave every 10 minutes, it doesn't and I end up losing all my work.

Does anyone know what can I do?  I've already tried updating to AutoCad 2025

Thanks!

Have you installed 2025.1 update?

What was your previous AutoCAD version before updating to 2025 when the lock up also occurred?

Does the freeze happen while running any other programs?

What other apps are running when the freeze occurs while running AutoCAD?

What is your Windows OS?

Yes, I have installed it today and my previous AutoCAD version was 2024,
both with a student license. It freezes at any moment, generally I am
working with Google Chrome opened at the same time and nothing else. I
believe my Windows version is Windows10.

When you installed 2025 did you choose to migrate the settings from 2024 when prompted?

Have you tried resetting 2025?

Could also be graphics card compatibility

When in AutoCAD enter Gfxdx12 and set that to 0 and restart AutoCAD. If still freezes enter command GraphicsConfig and under 2d Displays settings select another option

If still freezes go back to GraphicsConfig and disable hardware acceleration

If you let AutoCAD sit, does it eventually allow you to work again?   Check that you don’t have a bad path in your files tab, AutoCAD could be looking for something it cannot find.

You could also try creating a new profile and leave it generic.  See if the freezing stops. If it stops, you have an issue in your profile.  You can start adding items back slowly.  If AutoCAD freezes again, after adding something back, you have found the culprit.

Hope this helps.

How many times do we need to do these 6 so called fixed when the problem keeps persisting?
These "fixes" are not solutions, AutoCAD has developed a problem that needs to be fixed.

I have a high end CAD workstation, everything is up to date including AutoCAD yet a simple 18mb file keeps getting the blue circle between commands.

Here are the ways to open a support case with Autodesk if you are on subscription to seek out Autodesk Support's help:
https://www.autodesk.com/support/account/manage/use/support#:~:text=com/plans.-,Contact%20support,-S...

You can also request this for future versions... Autodesk does not change anything in the software if not enough people ask for it: do your part to ask/demand over here https://www.autodesk.com/company/contact-us/product-feedback

For your Autosave not working and you losing all of your work....

You need to get into the habit of saving all the time. A quick QS. Done. Any major move I make I save before and save after. Auto save is only used for system crashes like yours. Sometimes it does not catch the save before it crashes due to locking up. So always, QS. All the time.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for pointing that out.
The solution had nothing to do with the "fixes" which can lead people down a path they may not need to go down.

I troubleshot the issue myself and found the solution which I think should be the first thing people try before applying the "6 fixes".

Sometimes files get cluttered in the background with information that can't be seen in "purge" and they become sluggish or corrupt.

The solution was to:
1. Copy the contents from Model Space to a new blank drawing file (0,0,0 to 0,0,0 origin point)
2. If you have Viewports and title blocks, etc in paper space copy them across to the new drawing files paper space tab(s).
3. Save the new drawing file.
4. Close the old drawing file.

This clears the clutter and any unseen background issues that cause AutoCAD to be unresponsive or sluggish.

If all that fails, then, yes try to 6 fixes as it could be your system or install, not the file, but try fixing the file first.

Use WBLOCK instead of step 1. that's what it does. You can do step 4 right after this. So it's step 2 now.

For Step 2 just use ADCENTER command to copy over layouts between DWG files. I suppose that's step 3 now.

No need for step 4.
