AutoCAD marked Blocks

AutoCAD marked Blocks

Hello everyone,

I am a drafter and currently I'm working to make our drafting process more streamlined and compact. I've noticed in our AutoCAD program that previous drafters had created blocks in our Tool Palettes with an odd Lightning bolt visible on them. I at first believed that the Lightning bolt meant the block was associative but, I've found that when I bring these marked blocks into a drawing I can then alter them through the Properties tab. We use multiple sizes of similar objects in our work and instead of having to bring in one block of the needed size, I can instead bring in one of these 'marked' blocks and then use the Properties tab to change the object.

Maybe an example will help in explaining. We create equipment that is mounted into the ceiling of a room and use 'arms' of various sizes to help move equipment around in a room. Using one of these 'marked' blocks, I can bring in an arm and change the size to what I need, rather than having to look through all my blocks for that one arm that is the correct size. I figure that the marked blocks are actually multiple blocks mashed together, somehow allowing use to choose which of the mashed together block sizes we need to see, while keeping the others from our view.

The reason for me writing out all of this is that I'm trying to re-create these 'marked' blocks myself but there are no instructions on how. I don't even know what they'd be called, making it even harder to look up information on the process of their creation online. So, can anyone here tell me how to create such blocks in a step-by-step manner, or at least inform me what these types of blocks are called so I can properly search for further information on them?

There is also a dedicated dynamic block forum for autocad. Located here>>>>DYNAMIC BLOCKS  You can browse there to get some ideas of what you can do with dynamic blocks.
