Autocad lagging when selecting to copy

Good afternoon!

I am working between drawings (Autocad 2017) where I have to grey-scale the drawing (architectural layout) and then bring (copy+paste) the grey-scaled architecture into the main drawing to update it with the electrical layout. 

Re: the architectural layout.

I have frozen as many unnecessary layers as I possibly can but when I select the architecture to copy and bring it over, autocad freezes and I have to restart autocad?

I'm not familiar with xref's, is there anyway to select and copy the arch layout without autocad freezing? 

If xrefs is the only solution can someone please guide me through the process?
