Hi @smattie,

Can you describe your workstation? What is your operating system and specific hardware? Also which version of AutoCAD and what service packs and hot fixes have been applied?

I would like to get this resolved for you.

Hi @smattie,

Which specific nVidia card do you have and which driver? If you have this problem and have confirmed that you are not in SAFEMODE in AutoCAD, I suggest we consider rolling back drivers to the oldest version we can find. If that works we can step through more current drivers. In your Graphics Performance window, what is the Driver Version and Virtual Device values?

I also am curious if this problem exists with your configuration in AutoCAD 2017. Would you be interested in installing a trial version to see if the problem persists?

SAFEMODE = 0

The nVidia card is the optional "discrete GPU" (Graphics Performance staes
"NVIDIA GeForce GPU")

The driver version is 10.18.13.6472
virtual device: gdi12.hdi

Yes - i'd be glad to install a trial

Hi @smattie,

Here is a download location for the trial. Please let me know the results while I continue to look into this issue for you.

Safe mode in AutoCAD does NOT mean the same thing as in Windows "Safe Mode"

Are you starting AutoCAD with a command line switch to disable hardware acceleration ?

Like this:   "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2016\acad.exe" /product ACAD /language "en-US" /nohardware

If so AutoCAD will not let you switch back to hardware acceleration enabled within the software

Capture.JPG

The word "Safe Mode" should be changed to "Hardware Disabled on startup"

Oh, I thought you meant safe mode for AutoCAD - no, I never run Windows in
safe mode.

The error I get is "Changes are not allowed in Safe Mode" - I am not
running in safe mode.

I'm not sure I understand your note:
"Like this: "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2016\acad.exe" /product
ACAD /language "en-US" /nohardware"

&

"The word "Safe Mode" should be changed to "Hardware Disabled on startup"

Hi @smattie,

Internal sources tell me that the Surface Book is not actually a supported configuration for AutoCAD. I have not found the specific article regarding this yet but I did find one post that might be worth exploring for your issue.

"Since I can't enable hardware acceleration for the Nvidia chip,   I found out that by disabling the Nvidia chip and forcing Revit 2016/2017 to use IntelHD520,  Revit lets me use hardware acceleration and it works faster than Nvidias GPU in software emulation mode.

In AutoCAD there's a huge difference."

Many Surface Book users have issues with the display card in AutoCAD and Revit and some of it has to do with resolution but it appears that the issue you have is a typical condition.  Please try the above process and update your post so others might benefit.

Please select the Accept as Solution button if my post fully solves your issue or answers your question.

Once the NVIDIA GeForce GPU is disabled, the Intel 520 video card permits hardware acceleration. Interestingly, the Graphics and Performance window still shows the NVIDIA GeForce card being used. though has been clearly disabled.
