AutoCAD freezes when typing "dg" and "dgn" commands

AutoCAD freezes when typing "dg" and "dgn" commands

Hello,

I am using AutoCAD 2015 SP2 on Windows 10. I had a need to use the "dgnimport" command after receiving some .dgn files that needed to be converted to .dwg files. I used the command to create a new .dwg file from the .dgn file, and played around with the options, creating new .dwg files to see what changing the options would do. After I was done, I tried to use the command again, but when I typed in "dg" or "dgn" AutoCAD completely froze. I couldn't see my mouse while hovering in that window as well. I had to end task in the task manager. So after experimenting a bit, I discovered that if you just type "d", you can find the command in the long suggestions list. Also, if you type the command you want to use ("dgnimport" in my case) fast enough, you can avoid AutoCAD freezing. So it's something about typing "dg" or "dgn" slowly. If anyone has discovered this issue or has any suggestions, please let me know.

Thank you,

Matt

Hi @Anonymous,

I see that you are visiting as a new member. Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

Please tell me, if you reboot your computer and then start AutoCAD do you still have this problem? Or, Is it only have you have been working with DGN files?

Can you attach a sample dgn and dwg along with steps you used to work with the files?

I want to see if I can get this to work the same way on my computer. I work with DGN files fairly frequently and I haven't seen this issue before.

Hi @john.vellek,

After rebooting my computer and starting AutoCAD, I still have the problem. As soon as I started AutoCAD for the first time and opened a new drawing, I typed in "dg" and waited a second. I tried to continue typing, but AutoCAD was completely frozen.

I don't think I can attach a sample dgn and dwg since they are client files, but like I said, it isn't dependent on what file I have open. AutoCAD completely locks up when I type "dg" and pause, type quickly enough to get to "dgn" and pause, or type quickly enough to get to "dgnx", where "x" is any type or number of characters (at least one character), and backspace to "dgn" and pause.

Please try these scenarios out. I have confirmed that it is an issue on a coworker's computer as well.

Thank you,

Matthew Prichard

Thank you for the suggestion, @pendean. This fixed my issue.

I had the same issue of CAD freezing as the OP, so I went ahead and reset factor settings based on the link provided. This solved the issue of the DGN export, but I want to get my settings back.

I chose to backup my current settings, but now I cannot restore those settings from the zip folder. The zip folder cannot be unzipped and appears to contain zero files. I tried multiple methods (See links below) but nothing is working.

Any advice?

Thanks!

If you backed up your customizations like this

Then restoring them (assuming the ZIP file was created correctly and you did not change year-versions) is like this

Burt sometimes, as rare as it often is, what you think worked did not and you'll need to start over if you never backed up your setup ever before to a safe place to try (even if it is older). Sorry, it happens.

Thanks, Pendean.

I chose the option to backup the settings when that dialog box opened up after clicking "Reset settings to Default" (see below).

This produced the following zip file, which appears empty although shows a file size of 39 MB..

I don't see the options to Export/Import settings from the start menu as you've shown. Is there an easy fix for this?

Got it: I've never backed up something important like my custom settings in AutoCAD that way.

This is not the C3D forum and I do not have access to that program either, perhaps asking fellow C3D users may shed more light on the matter for you https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/civil-3d/ct-p/4003
