AUTOCAD freezes after starting

I'm having a lot of trouble getting in to AutoCAD lately, it's freezing as soon as I open a drawing.  The drawing opens and I can see it on the screen but I cannot select any icons, type in the command bar, even close it down - I have to close via Task Manager.

Your post doesn't provide near enough info for anything other than wild guesses as to what could be wrong.

Start with these:

  1. What is your exact version of ACAD?
  2. OS?
  3. System Specs?
  4. All dwg's or just one?
  5. Anything change recently?

You may want to check whether your drawing has any errors,

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/AutoCA...

If you could post what version of AutoCAD and how many files affected by this. We could provide some additional help.

Hello francoise.k,

There are a lot of posts regarding your issue but I haven't seen an update from you. I would like to make sure that your issue has been fixed.

Is this happening on all drawings?

Can you start AutoCAD (version?) with a new drawing? If so, when you save the new drawing, close it, can you reopen it without any problems?

If that works then perhaps try a RECOVER on one of the existing files to see if that helps. Audit and Purge are good tools to run frequently as well.

Please also try disabling all graphics hardware acceleration options.

One last thing to check is to see which page setup has been applied to layouts within the drawing(s). It is possible that the printer configuration is corrupt (PC3).

Please update your post so I can continue to assist you.

Please hit the Accept as Solution button if my post fully solves your issue or answers your question.

Thanks for the response - it isn't related to a drawing, it is happening when I open the application, when I open a drawing.  I cannot open a new drawing or even shut the program down.

I realise I didn't provide a lot of information in my post which has made it difficult to target the issue.

I'm using AutoCAD 2017.

Regards

Thanks for your response.  Agreed I didn't provide a lot of information but was hoping to get access to some technical support from an Autodesk Tech Support as I was having trouble getting hold of anyone to talk to about the problem.

I appreciate the response and suggestions for additional info required.

Cheers

Thanks John,

It's happening to all drawings, when it does happen.  Every now and then it will start up without a hitch though.  It will happen when I open the application fresh from the desktop, or open a drawing.

I can't start a new drawing, can't click anything, even to close the application.

I have disabled the graphics hardware acceleration as I saw that this was a suggested solution - this didn't solve the problem.

One of the posted responses stated that I hadn't provided enough info, which I'm sure is true - I'm using AutoCAD 2017, operative system is Windows 10.

I can switch between the "Create" and "Learn" tabs, but can't select anything.  I can click on the Send Feedback but it doesn't bring anything up.  I can click between the different views for Recent Drawings.

There was a solution which suggested I completely reinstall AutoCAD and reinstall, and it seems that this needs to be done in a particular order so as to remove certain applications before others.  I'm happy to try this as the next step but would like to know more detail on how this should be done.

Cheers

Francoise

Hello francoise.k,

It almost sounds like you have another window open but off-screen. Do you have multiple monitors on your system? If so, can you temporarily remove them and then see if the problem goes away?

Post #2 also shows how you can contact support directly for your issue if you would rather pursue a resolution in this manner.

Please post your results.

Please hit the Accept as Solution button if my post fully solves your issue or answers your question.
