Hello i'm very new to AutoCAD. Im trying to make a YZ 125 shift lever. I have the design drawn great in 2D but when I switch to 3D Design to try to extrude the surface. I says select area to extrude. I click on all my lines so there highlighted. Then i hit ENTER, and it starts to pull it. My issue is that it only pulls out the lines. It doesn't show my surfaces. Please help.

Hi,

 

can you please upload the drawing, at least a copy of the drawing with the elements you can't get extruded?

 

As first guess: if you want to create 3D-Solid objects then make sure that the contour is a closed object (closed polyline or region or circle).

Here's what you need to do.

 

1. Enter BOUNDARY and click within the area that you want to extrude. You'll want it set to polyline.
This will create a closed polyline from the bounding geometry (way cool).

 

2. Enter EXTRUDE, select the polyline, and choose the MOde option. Set it to Solid if necessary.

 

3. Enter a value for the extrusion distance.

 

At some point you'll want to rotate a profile by 90 degrees (think drafting glass box views), for which you'll need to the UCS command with the ZAxis option to serve as an axis of rotation. Attached is a dwg that steps through the method from left to right.

 

Left side: top, front, right side created in 2D

Left middle: Polyline profiles created and rotated into place

Right middle: Profiles extruded through each other

Right side: Enter the INTERSECT command and select the three solids

 

4. (Optional) Sign up for Autodesk University (November in Las Vegas) and attend my class in 3D Solid Modeling Basics in AutoCAD. 🙂

Also, normal process is to design in 3D first then use the model to produce detailed 2D drawings using paperspace viewports.  Starting from 2D is a valid process, although it's better to start "rough" as starting from a detailed 2D drawing means having to reconstruct areas as polylines for extrusion, revolution, and so on.

Ok, so I'm not normal, but try creating the model attached above using the normal method.

 

I bet my way is faster. 😉
