AutoCAD 2019 removed FBX import and export

Hi,

I just want to mention for all thinking about updating to 2019 that FBX can't be imported and can't be exported any more.

Also discussed >>>here<<< as I use it quite often to exchange data between Infraworks and Civil 3D. But there are some other reasons too to need FBX import and export.

For me it's not an upgrade, it's a downgrade when a new version of a product can do less than the previous one. Really sad with that.

I believe it is still part of ONE AUTOCAD with ToolSets (the upgrade to plain AutoCAD for a lot more $$): waiting on my testing-PC to get a new HD so I haven't downloaded it yet to confirm what else moved to it.

Hi,

>> I believe it is still part of ONE AUTOCAD with ToolSets

For me the "One AutoCAD" is a marketing name, but not a product specific name as my understanding is you have to install each vertical separately as before, but now it's called toolset and not any more "AutoCAD Mechanical" or so.

Could I be wrong with that?

from what i was told this is a correct statement

back to your problem

this is pulled from the help for Autocad 2019

FBXEXPORT,

-FBXEXPORT

Creates an Autodesk® FBX file containing selected objects in the current drawing. Replaced with the import DWG option in Autodesk 3ds Max and other products that support FBX files.
FBXIMPORT

-FBXIMPORT

Imports an Autodesk® FBX file, which can contain objects, lights, cameras and materials. Replaced with the export DWG option in Autodesk 3ds Max and other products that support FBX files.

i assume based off this they want you to use other products for this

Hi,

Thanks for confirmation!

>> i assume based off this they want you to use other products for this

And, of course, spend more money ... for a function you already had in 2018.

That's why i say downgrade to the change from 2018 to 2019

are you kidding me?

We use fbx in acad all the time when making 3d stuff for infraworks.

My sheltie would bite the person that decided on that...and then be their best friend too.

I move 3D objects seemlessly through FBX almost daily as part of my workflow. This is a huge negative for 2019 and just caught me off guard. My work around is to save as 2018, then open the file in 2018 and export. I know its hard to make vanilla Autocad all encompassing but the FBXexport can't have been a big subroutine.

Hi Dean,

thank you, looking to that AKN article it looks like all is as previously ... each vertical has to be installed separately.

I don't have access to One AutoCAD (yet) as we are "only ADN".

What you forgot to include in your post is the top of the table:

2019 Obsolete Commands and System Variables

This lists the commands and system variables removed since AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT 2013.

Hi,

>> What you forgot to include in your post is the top of the table:

May I ask what makes the table (or part of the table) you showed important?

The main aspect is a very important file-format is cancelled, making it impossible to export FBX to applications like Infraworks and import FBX from services like ReCap Photo .

It indicated that the options were no longer supported. Without that bit of
info one might assume that the table indicated supported options.

With "What you forgot.."  do mean DarrenP (not the TO)

That was not clear (for me, and Alfred)

..and Darren wrote 'this is pulled from the help for Autocad 2019' too, ok.

The topic is 'AutoCAD 2019 removed FBX import and export' and no one talk other statements.

Thanks anyway 🙂

This has to be one of the dumbest decisions I have seen in 2019.

You can bet I will absolutely minimize the use of that format from now on.

Here Autodesk is trying to make things more collaborative, and some yahoo removes fbx.

Must be some serious internal struggle going on as this is so counter to everything they claim to want.

I feel the same way
Of course there are many more good workflows than I had before.

Inventor ---> Civil ----> Infrawoks
Recap photo ----> Civil ---> Infraworks
Recap photo ----> Civil ----> Revit

I sincerely hope that autodesk will change its mind and include it in an update.

@Anonymous

Recap photo?

I tried the big three - pix4d, drone deploy, and agisoft photoscan, but never bothered with autodesk's solution but I would guess it uses pix4d behind the scenes.

I went with photoscan and its been the best thing ever. Everyone worries about needing some high end machine to do photo->point cloud processing but you don't. You do need a medium machine with meduim graphics card that has CUDA, but most cad machines do. Also, look up the "USGS workflow" for photoscan. It has a process where you refine the points used to stitch. Its easy, but odd that the documentation does not recommend it as part of the standard workflow. Its everything, and I am getting super clean point clouds from phantom 4 pro drone photos.

Best thing is PS costs $3500 once, not every year.

Back on the fbx subject - Why did you show Civil in the middle of those?

"Inventor ---> Civil ----> Infrawoks"

Did you mean Civil3D? I think you meant autocad, but why pull inventor stuff into acad?

Also, point clouds would go direct from recap to infraworks. I'm guessing you ment point cloud->surface->imx->infraworks. A vastly suprior workflow would be point cloud->Carlson precision 3d topo->surface->landxml->civil3d->imx-> infraworks.

Civil3d is horrible at making surfaces from point clouds. You gotta get a better tool like he carlson one, or trimble business center, vision lidar....

Yeah, I meant civil 3D.
Here's a workflow example:

I have a railway and each of its elements must have information to export in ifc.
Is necesary create the design in inventor or another program of MFG --->  export it as FBX, and more later this fbx I will import to Civil 3D and add information with the data extension.

It is possible too create a block with this Fbx model and make a repetition based on an axis or substitution based on civil survey points.

And finally

Infraworks for a presentation & navisworks to perform

Foto 1.pngFoto 3.png

I use recap pro for generation of elements in 3Ds max  or for add singularity elemennts in cross sections.

Foto 4.png

i liked this workflow but now i get more annoyed without the fbx importer

Just noticed this myself. It makes no sense at all, and totally screws up many of my workflows. It never stops to amaze me the number of stupid decisions that are made for the Autodesk products, and still we keep throwing our money at them.

Well, 2018 version will stay installed as long as needed on my computer.

I totally agree.  All workflows including Infraworks seem to be problematic now.  How do I get my sketched buildings from Infraworks to Civil or CAD?  Infraworks now becomes a solution completely enclosed in its own world when it's supposed to be used for preliminary design… if the work needs to be performed all over again in CAD during detailed design, there is no point.
