AutoCAD 2018 - Trim Crash

Hi

I am using AutoCAD 2018 and working on a simple line site plan drawing (no hatch or 3D elements).  Every time I use the TRIM command the product freezes and doesn't redeem itself.  I have tried pressing ESC but this didn't help.  I have tried leaving it for a while to see if it sorts itself out but this didn't work.  I have tried altering the Hardware Acceleration settings but this didn't help either.  I am now out of ideas.  I am currently tidying up the site plan and need to regularly use the TRIM command however, it crashes every time i enter this command so I cannot progress with the drawing.  I have had to close the program down (from the Task Manager) ten times this morning.

Please help.

Hi Oswaldodcb

I have updated the graphics card and re-tried the TRIM command in the drawing but it crashed straight away again.  Do you have any other ideas?

@Anonymous when you use Trim, do you select all the objects on the screen or only the ones you want to cut? Because if it is the first way you may have problems,

Have you tried to apply a default program reset?

I tried both options with the trim and both crash.

If I reset the program to its default setting will I lose all of settings to my company's shared files and my work space profile?

Not necessarily, you can export your configuration and then reset the program to apply an import of that file with all your settings,

I have no direct solution to the TRIM problem.

Since you are currently trying to use AutoCAD, a "workaround" may help you keep working 'til a solution is found.

Instead of using TRIM, try EXTEND.

Type EXTEND, select the line you want to trim at, then, push SHIFT and select the line you wish trimmed.

Pushing SHIFT while using the TRIM or the EXTEND commands executes the "opposite" of the command.

Using the SHIFT, you can EXTEND and TRIM at the same time.

Hope this will help you keep working until the real solution is found.

I have just reset the AutoCAD settings to default, re-opened the drawing and tried the command again and it instantly crashed.  I also tried the extend command suggested by KLYPHY (thank you) but this also resulted in it crashing.

Weirdly, I have just worked in another drawing and had to use the same commands and that drawing did not crash.  So could it be something with the drawing???

@Anonymous it is possible that the drawing has corrugated data, you can try to apply the PURGE and AUDIT commands, also closing that file and opening it from the RECOVER command, these commands will help you to clean and eliminate any errors in your file.

I PURGED, AUDIT and RECOVER the drawing but it still crashed.  I have now found the solution to be EXPLODE all of the polylines and then TRIM.  I am not sure why it cannot cope with trimming the polylines but that seems to be the problem.

Sorry guys but that is only a work around that works for a small number of polylines.  I have a similar problem on a site where I want to trim contours drawn as both polylines and splines.  Then the explode option is not practical.

A solution would be AutoDesk making the Trim Command function properly.

We have the same TRIM/EXTEND issue with large polylines (like contours or longitinal sections)

As soon as you cross the long polyline with the cursor during the command, AutoCAD hangs/crashes!

Example attached: Trim the magenta line to the blue line (enter block first)

This happens in version 2017 and 2018

In 2016 this issue does not exist

Please resolve the bug!

I am sorry you have this problem. Can you share a sample file?  Have you tried turning off Hardware Acceleration in GRAPHICSCONFIG? Or, tried toggling HQGEOM?

If you use the file attached by @Anonymous does the problem still happen?  I worked on that file and could not duplicate the crash.

Can you describe your OS (Winver), AutoCAD (ABOUT), and your graphics card make and model? Please also attach a screen capture of your GRAPHICSCONFIG window for me.

When it crashes, do you have the ability to submit a crash report? If so, please give me that report number so I can look for it.

Okay. I have the new Dell XPS 15 with a Gforce GTX 1050 Graphics Card. I have the 2018 version of auto cad. Here's the big picture: I have a set of poly lines ( forming block now representing insulation. When fitting the insulation my walls, I explode the block and begin to trim. Nearly Every time, my product freezes. You can't get out of the application without going to the task manager and ending the task. I've tried just about everything. Another issue which I believe to be at play is that I don't think CAD is using my graphics card. I think its still using the integrated. It shouldn't thought because I enabled the Geforce and disabled the intel. When you disable the intel however your drawing goes nuts.  Help... I've been going at this for 10 hours. Can you tell by my typing?

I cannot find the akirawood file, however I have upload an example file "test.dwg":

Trim the red line at the top of the blue line (with lots of vertices), where you select the bottom of the red line and cross over the blue line to select the top. As soon as you cross the blue line, we get a crash in 2017 and 2018 versions (no error report is created, AutoCAD just hangs)

Desktop specs:

• WIN7 SP1 64bit
