AUTOCAD 2018 TABLES

AUTOCAD 2018 TABLES

In being honest, tables have sucked in AutoCAD for quite a while now....borders not maintaining their color properties comes to mind since I just encountered this recently. But there are many other clunky parts of using tables in AutoCAD.

(Currently we in my office are still using an add on program to link in Excel tables).  We don't necessarily have complicated formulas that often.  But getting the table to look and print the way we want is a pain from all my past experiences.

I'm curious, what has been everyone's experience and take on AutoCAD tables in 2018?

Yes tables have lot of problems but I am trying to work with them and they making easier some staff to do. like filling, copying and such routine things. I am not using them for exporting to excell or such complex job.

No such problems here in R2018, but we are not using a 3rd party software to connect them to Excel either: could it be the changes you see are from Excel? Or an ill-defined active TABLESTYLE in the file?

Is this something you can reproduce on demand?

I am not using third part soft for exporting table in excell. just right clicking and exporting to csv. but not using that too. satisfied now with tables but they need more work with flexibility. like changing colors easier, also i want them to be flexible when typing texts in cells and cells become wider automatically. Tables are really helpful but needs some more work from Autodesk as for my opinion

Can you show us in sample DWG files or video?
Are you checking your TABLSTYLE setting to ensure they match what you have onscreen?

AutoCAD's table object cannot accurately represent the subtle details of an Excel spreadsheet.  Only the simplest array of data will look the same in a table.  Here is an image example that shows this.  While the bottom of this image was produced with AutoCAD 2010, I just tested the same file in 2018 and got the same results.

While I wish Autodesk did spend more time on cloud down to earth problems, I don't think the table object could ever come as close as third party addons that draw the Excel content as a block of native objects (mtext, lines, etc).  And don't even think about using OLE.

Well it could - if the effort was put forth to give the table object all of the properties and methods needed to replicate an Excel sheet.

Unfortunately, things like tables, sheet set manager, and some others were added to the application, then forgotten over the following years. CUI actually did receive a few enhancements after it was introduced, but those had to be made since it was so bad.

Having said that, I suspect the current status of tables in AutoCAD is sufficient for the vast majority of users out there. For those cases where a user needs more control and special formatting - that is when good third-party apps such as your XL2CAD can be added.

Question for the Group...

Does anyone know if "Tables" in the most recent versions of AutoCAD (from 2014 and up) can be used to help export information if inserted and used in REVIT?

The reason I ask is that recently we had to create "Area Spaces" for items in a REVIT project. In the past we just use to import these items as "Dumb-Blocks" into REVIT just as a space holder. Now we've been told... (months after starting the project) that the files all need to be REVIT compatible. Obviously if we had known this before we started the project we would have done our detailing in REVIT or outsourced the work.

That all being said, "Is there a way to  - Update REVIT files with AutoCAD Blocks" via using attributes & or Tables?

If so, 1.) How do we "Fix the AutoCAD File(s)?... 2.) In REVIT, "How do we Extract that information"?

As usual any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

Yes, tables in AutoCAD 2018 (and earlier versions) could definitely use some improvement.  In addition to losing border settings sometimes, I've also had trouble with cells automatically changing the cell input format type, no matter how many times you manually change the format back.  So let's say I type "1, 2, 3" in the cell and I want it left-middle aligned, and that's how I've set the table up.  At some point the table sometimes becomes buggy and will display "1.000, 2.000, 3.000" in just one or two of the cells and they will be right-bottom aligned.  It doesn't happen right away, but over time the table becomes corrupted or something.  I can only fix that by copying and pasting a working cell over the problematic one.  Manually adjusting it does nothing.

Also, not being able to use the Windows default commands Ctrl + Left Arrow and Ctrl + Right Arrow to jump to the beginning or end of a line, respectively, drives me nuts – every time!  I use it in every program, including AutoCAD, so when I hit the table I use those shortcuts instinctively and instead of going to the beginning or ending of the line like it's supposed to, it takes me to the previous or next cell.  Tab and Shift + Tab are the Windows standard for jumping back and forth between cells, so let me have my Ctrl + Left and Ctrl + Right default behavior.
