AutoCAD 2016 will not open when .dwg file is double-clicked

AutoCAD 2016 will not open when .dwg file is double-clicked

I am using Windows 7 professional.  I removed all my previous versions of Autocad using the windows add/remove program . I then downloaded and installed Autocad 2016. I can open drawings from within autocad or by dragging the file to the Autocad shortcut on the desktop. If I try to open a drawing by double clicking or a right click and select open like I could in previous versions, I get an error message that it cannot find the autocad 2015 exe. Dwd Launcher is set as the default to open the program. I tried a repair and a reinstall.  When I go into the registry, I see autocad 2015 not 2016. I suspect that this is the problem but I am not knowledgeable enough to try and edit the registry. I am attaching images of the error., the default program and the registry. Allan Daschuk

Looks like yours is still associated with 2015 rather than 2016. Simply open 2016 and it should take over.

I have opened many of my drawings from within autocad 2016 , but after the drawing is saved and closed, I still get the same error if I try to open it by double clicking. It as if it is looking for autocad 2015 and doesn't see autocad 2016. Allan Daschuk

Try a repair on AutoCAD 2016 see if that works. You will need to open a drawing firstly of course in 2016 to reassociate. If that doesnt work, take a look at the link i sent you before. Open AutoCAD 2016 and hopefully it rewrites those registry settings to open the last know product used for DWG format.

You could also look at turning Automatic Association back on in the registry... To Turn on automatic association in ACAD there is a registry key called DwgAlwaysAssociate in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\AutoCAD\R20.1\ACAD-F001:409\Profiles\<<Unnamed Profile>>\General\ set it to 1.

Also take a look at this useful link which explains what you can do in the registry... https://designandmotion.net/autodesk/mfg-pages/inventor/autodesk-dwg-launcher-wigged-out-fix/

You could always just set the dWG format to the AutoCAD 2016 acad.exe rather than DWG LAuncher.

Hi Duncan - thanks for the help. I have already previously tried a repair as well as a reinstall. I am not computer literate enough to know how to attempt to do registry mods. It seems to me that the DWG launcher is looking for a 2015 version that was uninstalled and refuses to reassociate the DWG launcher with autocad 2016.  I have tried to re-associate  DWG files with the autocad 2016 exe but it won't let me replace the dwg launcher in the open with default. I suspect that if I knew how to change the 2 registry files that say 2015 to 2016 that my problem would be fixed (screen shot is in original post)- but again I don't really know how to do that. Try to download this registry key. Rename the file from acad2016.txt to acad2016.reg.

I can't upload the file as registry file because it's not permitted here. You need to rename it first.

After you rename it, just double click it to change the registry value.

I export only the required value to update your registry, so it will not affect other software.

Note: this registry key will work only if you install AutoCAD in C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2016

Hi Edwin - IT WORKS!   Thank you very much. This was the kind of simple fix I was looking for. You are a genius. Thanks very much. Allan Daschuk

Glad that it helps.

It's actually the same solution as @ukdxb012 suggested. I just export my registry (which works) so you can import it without having to modify your registry manually.

Cheers,

Hi Gamiet,

Try to use the attached file. Change the extension to .reg then double click it.

Hi all

Someone help, nothing happens when I try launch cad by double click on file, the file is already associated with acad launch.
I had the same problem as Allan after installation 2016 version, but now is running because I deleted the 2015 instance on de registry, but to open a drawing, firstly I have to open autocad, then I open the drawing by autocad, I want to open drawing by the double click on file.

Thanks advancedd

Hi,

@Anonymous

Crossposting does not help you and does not help others, now you have to watch two threads and helping guys are working on 2 instead of one question.

As you created a new thread I would suggest to continue >>>there<<<.

I'm having the same problem.  We just started our yearly upgades and I have performed 16 so far and all 16 have this issue.  Opening AutoCAD/AutoCAD Mechanical 2016 does nothing to fix this problem.  I tried to do the open with command and re-associate with the AutoCAD DWG Launcher and I get a message that it cannot find the ACAD.exe in the AutoCAD 2015 folder.  I fixed many with the registry updater from this thread, but I have one that will not work.

I'm still waiting to find out from someone at Autodesk why we are having this problem. Personally I;d like to find out why it is affecting all of my workstations.  This is  not an intermittent issue here.  This is a consistant problem and a royal pain in my backside!

Is the only fix the registry updater in this thread.  Are there any fixed or information about this from Autodesk?

There is definitely a problem with AutoCAD 2016 products and Windows registry.  I make sure I do all the right things when performing my yearly CAD upgrades.  I do a clean uninstall and I turn the UAC off and install under my admin account.  I temporarily make my users Admins so that they run all their upgraded software the first time as an admin.  I still have issues with most of my AutoCAD products not registring properly.

Here is what I had to do to fix this problem for my installations.

I had the users openeall versions of AutoCAD on the users computer to include DWG TrueView so that all AutoCAD products ran at least once.  Do skip DWG TrueView becuase this seemed to be the problem.  This fixed most of the issues we had. There were a select few I had to run the registry updater included in this thread.

I hope this helps you!

Hi,

>> I temporarily make my users Admins

This could result more in a problem then it might help.

The reason for that: when AutoCAD initializes first time the files, folders and registry content the initialization process creates might get admin rights.

When you then remove the permission account from the user these files, folders and registry contents can be blocked from reading or writing, so making some content looking like defect.

I'm with you that the installation has to be done with admin permissions, also the first start of AutoCAD I use a Windows user account which has admin permissions, just to see it's working and it does well during the secondary installer process. But I would not change the user account permissions as every reduction of permissions might conflict with content created during the permissions where more.

Dear Edwin,

I managed to solve the problem with opening file with my Autocad LT2016, (thank you so much as for the last 3 months I was seeking help everywhere))  however the icone next to the file name is still not right. Windows 7 somehow does not recognize the programme.

Thank you in advance
