AutoCAD 2016 Screen Resolution

AutoCAD 2016 Screen Resolution

I recently upgraded/migrated to AC 2016 from AC 2014 and the resoltion on screen has deteriorated noticably.  From R.14 I have uopgraded several times, and have never had any issues with line and text resolution.  With 2016, the geometry and text is not nearly as crisp as in prior versions.  I am using a Viewsonic VA2465Smh monitor.  It has full HD 1920 x1080 resolution, running at 60pHz refresh rate.  I have it connected to the HDMI input connected to a DVI port on an Intel 46000 HD integrated video card.  I am running Acad on a a fairly new Windows 7 workstation with an Intel core i5 64 bit motherboard.  My system far exceeds the minimum system requirements as stated by Autodesk.

I have been told that the Autodesk techincal hlp is not an option becuase I don't have an Approved/Recomended graphics card.  I am hestitant to invest in a new graphics crds, since I am not sure that is the problem.  In an effort, I recently installed the following graphics card:

Nvidia GEForce GTX 750

1 GB GDDR5 main memory

128 bit memory bit width

80 GB/s memory bandwidth

1020 MHZ base clock

OpenGL 4.4 Support

DirectX 9 thru 11 enabled

Windows 32 and 64 bit vista to 8.1 support Up to 3 monitors supported

240 HZ max refresh rate

The Nvidia card made no improvement in resolution, and in fact may have been a little worse.  I am hesitant to invest in a 4k monitor as a trobleshooting step due to the steep price tag.  I was wondering if anyone esle experienced this problem and what the resolution was.  Why am I suddenly encountering this issue on 2015-2016 versions. I like the AC 2016 interface, but for the time being I am back using 2014.

I'd stay away from the 4K/UHD monitors for now - the program isn't equipped to deal with that for another release or two (have a search through the forum - there are several long discussion threads on the issue).  But keep the dedicated video card.  Even though it doesn't take full advantage of it, it's still better than the on-chip graphics - especially if you have an otherwise modest system.

There are a number of system settings for "smooth graphics" in the latest releases (incidentally, they are using an updated graphics engine coinciding with the retirement of XP and Vista support), which some indicate as working better when turned off.  Always a good thing to review any new system variables when moving to a new version of AutoCAD, as the default settings may affect the way you are used to working.

Try turning LINEFADING off, and if that's not enough, try turning LINESMOOTHING off.  AutoCAD 2016 has a "High quality geometry (for capable devices)" in GRAPHICSCONFIG that may be an option to uncheck as well, if your card supports it.

Thanks for you replay regarding my screen resolution issue. Can you suggest
a HQGEOM system variable to use? I am currently set on 1.

Thank You!

Try right clicking on Graphics Performance in the bottom right of the screen and turn off High Quality Geometry, which is the equivalent of setting HQGEOM to 0. Hit apply and then open Graphics Performance again and uncheck Smooth Line Display. Those are the 2 graphics enhancements since 2014. Everything is personal as to how you want your screen to look. I never liked the Smooth Line Display that came out in 2015, but I like the High Quality Geometry setting. But both of these settings will tend to make colors a slight bit duller in my opinion than if they were both off, but everything should look a little less jagged around the edges.

Thanks for the feedback and advice. Your suggestions have made some
improvement so I appreciate the suggestions. May I ask what type and spec
of graphics card you are using in your workstation.

I personally prefer AMD FirePro cards to nvidia Quadro cards because I think they give an all around brighter, more colorful image. Not just in ACAD, but in everything. I have been using a W5000 for a couple of years and think it is great. Works perfect in ACAD 2D and 3D, Revit and Rhino. And when I find a driver that works good, I don't obsess about changing it. I'm currently using a driver that is from last June, but it works great so I see no need to change it.

Hello Michael - in your original post, you mentioned, "I recently upgraded/migrated to AC 2016 from AC 2014 and the resoltion on screen has deteriorated noticably."  It would be very helpful if you could post a pair of comparison images.  Screenshots will allow us to inspect the differences for possible future improvements.  I know that you've made quite a few changes since your initial configuration, but if you still see an undesired change when you go back to the High Quality Geometry and Linesmoothing, please show us where you see problems.  Use either 2016 for both or include 2014, since that was the version that you preferred.

Thanks for your help,  Bill

Bill,

I have attached some screen shots as per your request regarding my inquiry
about unsatisfactory screen geometry resolution.

1.) AC2016 Before screenshot shows the resolution of the screen geometry
before making any adjustments. A little fuzzy.

2.) AC2016 After shows better line clarity after turning off LINEFADING
and LINESMOOTHING, and also turning off High Quality Geometry.

3.) AC2016 Graphics Performance Settings screen shot simply shows the
graphics Performance settings as they are currently set.

I had the same resolution issues with AC2015, but I just decided to wait
until 2016 came out. Unfortunately AC2016 had the same issue.

FYI: The bigger problem that I am now having with AC2016 is that about 50%
of the time that I go to adjust a layer state in the Layer State Manager,
the program freezes up and does not unlocked any amount of time. I have to
open up the Task Manager to close the program and reopen as a "recovered"
file. I have switched back to using AC2014 (as I do not seem to have this
issue with that version) until I can get this figured out. Please advise.

This thread includes some additional observations beyond the appearance of AutoCAD on high resolution displays. At this time, the development team is looking for comments about your experience with setting the Windows display scale to 150% or more, to accommodate newer monitors. Please take this quick survey (5 minutes), if you have tried to use AutoCAD this way.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Hi

I suppose my question with thsi issue of high definition screens is why have AutoCAd not resolved thsi problem.

I use a Dell XPS with an ultra high resolution screen 3840 x2160 and is almost inoperable as an Autocad drafting tool.I gather teh same goes for Adobe

It is unlikely that screen resolutions will decrease going forward, rather the opposite I would have thought.

This issue need a fix  please AutoCAD !

I know this threaded is 2 yrs old, but none the less.

If you having issues with the Layers command (and often people do as its graphics related) such as layer command not displaying layers properly or being very slow graphically, use the command 'classiclayer' or type 'class' and the Layer command will function normally with and older 'look' about it.

I use this all the time as it is almost instant in every case, where as the new version is quite slow.

This saved many a heatache and should be used be everybody who does a lot of layer management / layer states etc.

It is super quick.

cheers.

This is a dumb question, but are you sure your resolution is set correctly on the PC ?

Is the effect only in Autocad or all software?

No, not really, but I do not notice an issue with any other programs. I just have a stock graphics card, but it seems to work okay as long as I don't try to do a lot of heavy duty rendering. I am counting the days until I can upgrade my PC and graphics card capability.
