AutoCAD 2016 new IBL use as background

Hi

In cad2016, the new image based lighting have several hdri files used to illuminate the scene.  I try to visualize the hdri image in my viewport but i dont find an option to enable that.  My viewport is dark and the image only appears in render time.

Im in a camera view, in realistic style and without default lights.

Anyone know if its possible? Maybe editing some xml files in cad folders?

Cheers

Hi Richard,

Thank you for posting, and I'm glad to see you're diving right into the new rendering features!

I've been testing the new rendering engine, to see if the IBL backgrounds will display in modelspace or paperspace viewports. So far, it appears the backgrounds only display in the render window, as you've described. Since the feature is so new, it is unclear whether or not this should be possible, so I'll raise the question internally, and report back with an answer for you shortly.

Hi Victoria

Thanks for your support.

Without the ibl image background its difficult to choose the angle camera and made a good integration.  Another thing that i review is the custom background option,  we cant add hdri files and illuminate the scene with them.  If i use low dinamyc range as jpg, png of tiff files, they only contribute with the background image but the illumination still baked from the template hdri files, both level of brightness and gamma doesnt match.

Finally, we dont have options to adjust the position or size of the background and doesnt have ambient occlusion control. Or it deppends from the render manager presets?

Cheers

Hi Richard,

I confirmed with the development team that the ability to preview the background image in modelspace or paperspace viewports is not possible in the 2016 release. However, this feature is already being investigated as a future enhancement, for all of the reasons you mention.

In the meantime, you could set up a low-quality (read: quick) Render Preset that renders a region, so that you can quickly preview the background image and make the necessary adjustments. This is obviously a workaround, and hopefully we will see the feature enhanced soon.

Regarding the additional issues you're experiencing with custom HDRI illumination, the position and size of background images, and ambient occlusion control: I'll be happy to look into these further. I'd like to request some files from you for testing, so I can open you a separate case and work with you directly, if that's all right with you.

Hi Victoria

Thanks for your support.   My scenes are about office furnitures and some interiores like kitchens or bathroom.  I use them only for testing the new features in cad 2016 and autocad architecture.

I will prepare the files for send.

Can you provide your email please.

Cheers

Hi Richard,

I created a case for you so that we can work directly. I sent you an email from the case, which you can reply to with the file attachments, and I'll be happy to investigate further.

Hi Richard,

You can add a custom file by overwriting one of the preset HDR files in the Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2016\Environments\Half_Hdr folder. For the image to work, it must be 1500 x 750 pixels and ideally a true HDR panorama as opposed to psudo HDR generated from exposure tweaked JPEGs. The best results are from image sets with a wide exposure range and the exposure value will probably need to be a bit higher for custom files than the images used for the presets.

There doesn't appear to be any options for Previewing and scaling yet but scaling the model or changing the units with a bit of trial and error can produce excellent results.
