AutoCAD 2016 Import custom settings does not work

We have a new computer that we would like to customize AutoCAD the same as another computer. Both computers are running AutoCAD 2016 and Windows 7 Professional. The first computer successfully migrated from 2015 to 2016 and is up and running. I exported the custom settings through Start\All Programs\Autodesk\AutoCAD2016-English\Migrate Custom Settings Migrate Custom Settings\Export Custom Settings and received the message that the export was successful. When I tried to import the custom settings into the new computer, after I transfered the zip file to the new computer, nothing happened. No message. No change. I exported again and imported again and still no change. I tried to do the same on a third computer and it would not import there either. I had done this in previous releases and it worked fine. Manually customizing would be a time consuming process. Any fixes for this problem?

I saw that post previously and just tried it again. I placed the zip file
onto my desktop and on the c drive.
Still no message pops up and no custom settings are imported.
I even went back and exported again and tried to import that file and still
nothing.
Any others ideas other than manually customizing?
Thanks
Bob

Windows 8.1? Win7 here, I've used that feature a couple of times already with no issues, ZIP file was on my Windows desktop in Win7 and I was logged into each PC as full admin in Windows.

Hi Bob,

When you click on 'Import AutoCAD 2016 Settings,' does nothing happen or does it pop up the dialog window to select the ZIP file but then after you do so and click Open, nothing more occurs? Does anything happen when you try the 'Export AutoCAD 2016 Settings' or 'Migrate from a Previous Release'? All these run off the same EXE file. Startup switches determine what feature is run.

Try right-clicking 'Import AutoCAD 2016 Settings' and choose "Run as administrator" to start it. Maybe the elevated permissions will help. You might even try setting UAC in Windows 7 to "Never notify" just to make sure it is not interfering.

Hi,
Sorry it took me so long to get back to this problem.

To answer your questions, on computer #3 on which I am trying to import
custom settings, the dialog window did pop up in order to select the ZIP
file and then nothing happened after I clicked open. I tried to Run
(import) as administrator and had the same result. I did export custom
setting from computer #3 (even though there were no custom settings) and
that created the ZIP file successfully.
The computer is new and 2016 is the first installation so I could not
migrate from previous release.

I tried to import custom settings from computer #2 and this time it worked.

It seems that the problem lies with the exported file from computer #1 even
though it seemed to export properly.
I did receive a message stating that it successfully exported custom
settings and created the zip file, but Importing it did not work on
computers #2 & #3 after several attempts.

In the end, I have achieved my goal, even though I do not know why there is
a problem with computer #1 export.

It may be time to wipe out computer #1 and re-install everything.
Thanks for your help.

I'm glad to hear that you got it sorted out! On computer #1 you might try importing settings from computer #2 and then see if that will export a usable ZIP file afterwards. Or reset AutoCAD to defaults, then import settings from computer #2, and then export and see if the ZIP works. It may indeed be that AutoCAD needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled to get the export working again if the above tests do not resolve it.

As you can see here, I do not have the option to Migrate From a Previous Release.

Hi Chad,

Exporting/importing settings only works between the same version of AutoCAD. Migrating is for going between versions. However, migrating settings is not a supported feature with AutoCAD Mechanical. That is why you don't have the menu option to do it. But, you might still be able to do it by running the AdMigrator.exe program directly. Have a look at these articles:

After reading more about the export/import feature I did figure that out.

We do have ACADM, but we run it as generic ACAD.

AdMigrator brought most of everything over. That saved a ton of wasted time.

I have been running into this issue as well and I agree that it is an issue that occurs during the export. I can successfully export settings and re-import and export again to a different file but often if I open AutoCAD and change one or two settings it will not export correctly the next time. For reference there is no error in the export dialogue box. As Bob mentioned, the import lets you select a zip file and then does nothing.

I have found some workarounds where I replace the customization files after a successful import and re-export without opening AutoCAD but this is quite a pain and often does not catch all the settings. I am trying to produce a settings file that I can use for other users in the company. I am trying to go from 2016 Mechanical to 2016 Mechanical.

I would be interested in hearing if others have run into this issue and have determined the cause.

Thank you, JZ
