Autocad 2016 does it support the classic workspace?

Hi All

This is my first post here.....

I use Autocad mainly for 3D using solids. Being in Australia my building design suite upgrade is not yet available maybe this month, according to the distributor.

They do not know the answer to this question re the classic workspace!

I would like to know for certain the 2016 version of Autocad supports the classic workspace, If I had to use the ribbon it would slow my workflow terribly, Using the classic workspace I have almost every tool in position around my main screen (I use 4 monitors in total) this gives me a desktop showing other views of the object and my properties palletes for the pbject being drawn while keeping my main screen clear for editing.

My classic menu system is set up so that for almost all the operations I perform there is an Icon to click directly, (The ribbon makes you page through its various modes to find a simple command)...  Terribly slow and annoying

I sometimes use Autocad Architecture. With the ribbon unfortunately. when I do my drawing speed goes into slow motion. I hate it.

Can someone please confirm that the classic menu system is still available within Autocad 2016?

Thank You

Regards

John McNamara

"Classic" workspace is dead and gone: it only remains an option to put back because that's how Autodesk has always worked, they never get rid of old content and why the program is so bloated. Look at the old DOS sidebar feature, it's still there after DOS stopped being a relevant OS decades ago.

Ribbon is not going away: Microsoft still uses it now in Win10 and their current software. Autodesk won't change until Microsoft does.

1. RIBBONCLOSE

2. CUI

3. Navigate to customize tab.

4. Right click Workspaces, add new.  Name it whatever you'd like.

5. Right click on your new workspace, select Set Current.

6. Open Toolbars in left pane

7. Left click on your new workspace name

8. Drag all the Toolbars you want from the left pane to the Toolbars in right pane

9. Close CUI

10. Move all the toolbars where you want them on the screen

11. Lock the toolbars using LOCKUI, enter a 1 to lock toolbars

Bingo, back to classic view.  Thousands of clicks saved per day, frustration and carpal tunnel syndrome eased!

guys! its so annoying. the whole internet is full of comments telling the classic toolbars are gone and deal with it. others import workspaces from earlier versions in the most complicated ways.

PLEASE!

!!!!!!!!

command: -toolbars (dont forget the "-" ) then open just any random toolbar, for example "draw" or "modify" or whatever u like and choose "show"

!!!!!!!!!

from now on you just rightclick on the toolbar that you just opened and you get the whole list of all the oldschool toolbars that we were used to.

Toolbars are more efficient than keyboard commands or the ribbon. One click!..and never take your eyes off the screen.

That's a pretty bold (and inaccurate statement).  If you're doing keyboard shortcuts right, you're not looking at the keyboard.  Not only do your eyes never leave the work, your cursor never leaves the drawing area!

Ever wondered what those nibs are on the "F" and "J" keys on most keyboards?  They're markers for "home row" so your fingers can find their default location without looking at the keyboard.  I do all my keyboard inputs with my left hand while drawing with my right.

I concur with nrz13. Since I started doing CAD before ribbons and when the monitors were alot smaller I simply did not want the toolbars occupying so much space. It was much, much easier to type 2 or 3 character shortcuts with the left hand while using the mouse with the right.

Well, I think you just proved my point.  Typing two or three letter commands, and more if you need a osnap not currrently set is more work (classic sense) than clicking on one Icon.  I have set up many command macros.

OSNAPs can be controlled from the keyboard as well, but I also have OSNAP and ORTHO tied to my forward and back buttons on my mouse for on-the-fly changes.  Entering 1- to 3-key commands is still faster for people that can use the keyboard well than anyone using a mouse to navigate to a toolbar.  The difference in time is probably minimal, and everyone has their own preferences (which is why AutoCAD provides all the different options).  But entering via toolbar can never be faster because your cursor is leaving your drawing.

Keyboard commands are much faster then moving the mouse over and clicking from what I've seen. I just set up all my commands I use to one letter in most cases. One guy I worked with spent half his day searching through 100's commands he had in old school toolbars. Hitting L for line is far quicker.

I also use my left hand to issue commands. To deal with osnaps and transparent commands I use

an add-on called Autohook. I can hit alt-s for intersection or alt-e for endpoint  right in the middle

of a command. It can be set up anyway I like it.

This program has been around for awhile. I used it for R14 and was pleasantly surprised to find

out it is still available. I don't know why they don't the word out about it because it sure makes

acad much easier.

The program costs $49 but there is a 30 day trial period and you can keep on using it free after the

trial period although with a message window that pops up when the computer is turned on.

Here's the link:

I wrote I use alt-s and alt-e. Actually it is Ctrl-s and Ctrl-e. Microsoft hijacked the Alt key so I had to use Ctrl instead

Thanks Archearttutorias

This is my normal desktop layout
I use 4 screens 2 for Autocad ine above the other and two for reference material Photpgraphs Etc.

The Drawing is a machine tool design I am working on. every part is in a separate referenced file. some are grouped into assembly files.
Most of the 3D commands I need are a click away!

This is a great discussion thread! I think it's a great representation of the different workflows each drafter has regardless the release they began with.

To answer the original posters question; AutoCAD Classic workspace is not available in AutoCAD 2015 and later versions.

There are multiple ways to manually customize a workspace to get it close to what was made available in previous releases.

Below is a step by step article and YouTube video to help walk you through it.

AutoCAD workspaces have changed over the years since 1982 but user feedback shown in this thread is noticed. I hope you all have submitted your input at the Product Feedback site, if not I urge you to please do so.

I highly recommend those who are passionate about certain features or have suggestions for improvements join the Autodesk Beta program.

This specific thread is of importance and is viewed daily by other users like yourself who are looking for help. Thank you for such a great dialogue and please continue to provide input and feedback.

Hi, my first time posting and I am hoping Autodesk actually listen to the people who are actually using their products!

I started using Autocad during the DOS interface some time ago and ever since Windows the software was slowly released usually having a 2 year delay whilst developers & users sorted the various bugs & glitches (before most users upgraded in my experience that is!). Recently I started using LT 2014 which I think is a big improvement from LT 2008 - I am currently working within an office for another company with 30+ users with varying versions of LT from 2009 up to 2016.

Autodesk please stop! LT 2015 is rubbish - I bet the vast majority of true cad technicians use the Classic Interface it works well & is eaily tailored to suit user needs. I tried 2015 but no - it seems that noone actually involved in using the software was involved with its creation. It is terrible.

There have been many glitches between drawings prepared by 2015 users which then when another person opens in previous version has stupid errors and parts that do not work as they should. This is not acceptible at all in a busy office. (this is not because of the file save settings being different either as they are all set to the same by default).

My own license is for LT 2009 I was looking to upgrade to LT 2014 but this is no longer possible? (ridiculous?!!) No way will I upgrade to 2015 or above unless things change - nor will I do this rental nonsense!

Autodesk I realise the company must keep updating products (not however to the cost of compromising product efficiency which is what is happening). The way things are going Autocad is moving away from its roots - I know of a few offices that are moving away from Autocad.

New cad users have cheaper alternatives that are fully compatible.

LT was supposed to be a stripped down simple interface for those not needing more complex packages - this has always been its strength.

Wake up Autodesk please! Perhaps there is room for a stripped down 2014 budget platform a LT of LT sub £200 XLT perhaps? that would answer all our prayers - come on Autodesk do something! (get rid of the supposedly clever bits noone uses anyway!)

Cheers

Alex

Where? I don't recall any comments like that. The classic "Workspace" is no longer built in, but I don't recall anyone saying that the toolbars are no longer available.

The toolbars and pull-downs are no longer being updated, so at some point they will be like the screen menu is today.... operational, but limited in use.

LT is AutoCAD without Lisp, Express Tools and advanced 3D: simpler interface? Where did you get that peice of misinformation?

The old-school Classic workspace can be manually added like this, it's not been a secret ever and in the year 2016 you ought to Google Search solutions as there is almost a fix for anything these days http://www.thesourcecad.com/how-to-add-classic-workspace-in-autocad-2015/ and yes, toolbars are still around.
