ACAD2015 Windows 8 Xref fail

Greetings,

An engineer in our group recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 and installed AutoCAD2015 and Service Pack 1 (Service Pack 2 prevents all xref functionality so we don't install that one).

With that new configuration, he is able to xref drawings only after they have undergone an AutoCAD revovery.  Each recovery takes a long time and there are hundreds of drawings, so I'm trying to figure out why he can't xref these drawings.  Other users on Windows 8 and Windows 7 have no problem referencing our drawings.  He is able to open the drawings, just not xref them.

Anyone have any ideas why the combination of Windows 8.1, AutoCAD 2015 and service pack 1 prevent xref unless recovery has been done?  and only on this one machine?

I'd really like to help this guy out and I'm hoping someone here can point me in the right direction.

Thank you,

Erik

@Anonymous,

   If the files being xreff'ed are on a network then I would advise that they follow the steps in this article:

Cannot Load Xref from Network:

http://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Cannot-load-xrefs-from-network.html

Also, the Xref issue in SP2 was resolved with this hotfix.

AutoCAD SP2 Xref Hotfix:

http://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/downloads/caas/downloads/content/autodesk-C2-AE-autocad-C2-AE-2015-sp2-xref-hotfix.html

It could be that the files being Xreff'ed had file corruption, that is why they required a recovery. File corruption occurs during the read/write process so saving over the network can cause this if there was latency or interruptions during the save process.

Sorry, I've forwarded your suggestions to the user I referred to.  Haven't heard back.  I'll follow up and let you know.

Nope, no solution.

All of our autmated attachment code is written with absolute addresses (\\Server\Share\*) so drive letter isn't a factor.

Service pack 2 may have solved unresolved xrefs, but that's not the problem we've been having with service pack 2.  With service pack 2, xrefs can't even be attached, resolved or unresolved.  And that's the behavior this user is experiencing.

I'm recommending to him that he uninstall all ACAD products including service packs, then reinstall ACAD2015 and service pack 1.  If that works, then I suspect he had installed service pack 2 at some point and that's messing with his ability to attach xrefs.

Other users running windows 8 and ACAD2015 are able to xref drawings with no problem.

If anyone has any ideas why this user cannot xref any drawing, either manually or via automated systems, please let me know.

Thanks,

Erik

@Anonymous,

   If he was getting the problem off of SP2, when you reinstall AutoCAD and then reinstall SP2 make sure to use the SP2 Xref hotfix or stay on SP1. SP2 may have caused the behavior:

From -  XREFs fail to Resolve after installing SP2:

http://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/XREFs-unresolved-after-installing-Service-Pack-2-for-AutoCAD-2015-products.html

After installing Service Pack 2 for AutoCAD 2015 (or an AutoCAD 2015 vertical), when opening a drawing file, external reference (XREF) files will not resolve.

  • The same XREFs resolved correctly before installing Service Pack 2 for AutoCAD 2015 (or an AutoCAD 2015 vertical).
  • The AutoCAD Text Window (F2) may display messages for each unresolved XREF, such as:
    • Error: Unable to load <file path/name>.
    • Drawing may need recovery.
    • It is recommended you open and resave the Xref file to remove excess scales.
    • <file path/name> reference file may have changed since host drawing was last saved.
  • In the XREF Manager, the unresolved files contain the correct file path, but cannot be reloaded or reattached.
