A list of Problems & Annoyances of Auto-Cad...

Anonymous
Not applicable

To make my working life easier, and not having to do 3-5 more steps than necessary to get something done in Auto-cad; please fix the following Auto-cad sloppy programing bugs (most have been an annoyance since R2010 and still current several revisions later in R2018),

1. Automatically invert layers when opening the Layer property Manager, because I'm sick & tired off inverting the filter dozens of time per day,.. for years.

2. FILLET POLY-LINE TO ARC (Radius=0) so as to join the arc segment to the poly-line collection, by-passing the edit poly-line process).

3. Poly-lines linked to fields in text objects:- Indicate with a 'highlight' link of some kind.

4. Field Manager :- have a button to 'copy to' poly-line object ID to Formula Box, so as to avoid having to copy paste manually.

5 When creating a new Layout Tab force the last tab to be current instead of hiding it! (new 2018 bug)
The latest  version (2018) for Layout tabs, again this adds another step in the process of getting work done over the previous (2013) version I was using. Please add (back) a back / forward arrow '< >'next to the V arrow at the end of the tabs; allowing to scroll through the tabs.

6. IMAGEFRAME When turning off in model space (1 to 0) the image frame does not hide even after Regen / Redraw! you have to turn it back to 1 then back to 0.

7. When hatching; enable to select 'object' to match angle.

8. What's the point of having dialogue boxes appear off screen?? especially on a single monitor?  it appears to lock Auto-cad giving the impression you need to crash out of the program and re-start. dialogue boxes on screen by as default please.

9. Offsetting poly-line arcs.... there was a bug in 2013LT that would no offset arcs co-plainer to tangent line; possible fixed in Auto-cad 2018LT? I don't seem to be able to replicate this in 2018.

10. When adding vertices to a hatch bounded by poly-line; don't have the hatch 100% opaque so you can't see the poly-line under the hatch, makes it hard to pick the poly-line if you can't see it?...

11. Hatching 1.
When hatching a complex object the pick mouse hover over polygon visualizes an hatched area but when picked to hatch it returns error 'The specified point must be....'
If it can visualize a hatch it should be able to actually hatch and area?.

I find doing a Boundary to get a poly-line faster and more foolproof than doing a hatch with or without poly-line. It shouldn't be.

Why is auto-cad such a dog at hatching? I'm left wondering if Auto-cad should abandon the vector based hatch patterns altogether in favor of another programmatic layer (like to Adobe's graphics).

11. Hatching 2.
The ability to escape / break directly out of a hatch process; simply to escape the wait while the program tries to work it out which it usually can't, it can take minutes (a selection of ploy-lines with more than 3 arcs like large areas of roadways and footpaths etc.).

11. Hatching 3.
When there is hatching in paper space (Layouts) Associative to a polygon and sent to back; Then when a new view-port is created, the hatching comes to the front. Annoying when you are creating 30 or more view-ports.

12.(A) Memory glitches galore: After an hour or two...when opening the Layer Manager the list is not visible but in its place is a glitched image of the drawing underneath. Layer manager in several usage circumstances runs out of memory?

12.(B) When selecting an item; then in the properties manager like a pull drop-down list box Auto-cad freezes up requiring an ALT Delete crash out to desktop. It's a pain because you have to recover...

12.(C) When adding vertexes to ploy-lines 6 or 7 seems to be the limit after that user has to exit Pedit and start process again for six or seven more times...repeat...

13. Xref fade control: seems to be global for Attachments and Overlays, even when printing a layout! Auto-cad needs two conditions for fading xrefs; for model space & Layout space; a) Overlays only b) Attachments only.
Simply because in model space I want overlayed references to be 'quite' in background, but final print from Layouts to be 'not faded on X-referenced attachments.

14. Text Formatting: Title Case button next to Upper  & Lower Case buttons. I know, I know; when hell freezes over! R14 and still waiting...
Placing 'Subscript' & 'Super Script' buttons there is the most unused addition I could think of.

15. Sheet Sets!!!... Where to start??!!... Create a Sheet Set; Always stalls on the first dialogue screen, always!... sometimes you can get past by clicking everything BACK & FORWARD until it proceeds to next, other times close sheet set manager AND OR re-start Auto-cad and try again, and again! It seems to stall either on Store sheets set data file... or Sheet Set Properties...; either one doesn't seem to matter (Keep in mind we use DropBox in our office with local archive held on C drive). And or sometimes can't find the file at all in 'Browse' until Auto-cad is re-started...
Clearly this was too hard to fix for the Auto-cad R&D 2010 Beta and later versions test teams?
And if and when you get to complete the Sheet Set list Why can't the bloody finished sheet list order as per the Layout tabs? Auto-cad once again wants me to add another 2 steps to what could be straight forward process!... pisses me off when I'm in a hurry to get stuff out the office.
I'm not a fan of the Sheet Sets Manager, I have even completely lost a drawing when I deleted a sheet set, the problem is nothing has been fixed since version 2010!! Worse Auto-cad programming EVER! keep up the good work at annoying users...

16. When dropping dimensions onto work sometimes a dimension will go below the dim line and sometimes above. And when selecting the dim text node a pop-up list presents; on that list please include Text Position Vertical "Below Dim Line" as there is already an option to send it 'above dim line'.

17. When Auto-cad Window is sized smaller than the desktop (Restored Down) the palettes  (Properties Manager, Sheet Set Manager etc) don't snap to the Auto-cad Window but stay in place as if the window is maximized. I find this behavior strange as I expect anything Auto-cad to be within the Auto-cad window.

This list is partially complete, and put together over 2 weeks of my drama filled Auto-cad experience.
Are the above queries related to the actual base programming of Auto-cad? I'm left wondering if the actual kernel of Auto-cad would be too expensive to fix?
There seems to be only non essential upgrades since 2010 like visuals & icons re-designs re-colored, and moving stuff around so it's harder to find things etc.
The End for now...

Ok. I'll start with number one. You can write a filter and get the invers of it by putting a tilde (~) in front of it. ~*|* will get you all non-Xref layers.

A lot of what you're asking for can be handled with Macros. A good one to start with is Fillet that sets a 0 radius. I haven't read your complete list but will try to cover more later.

HI @Anonymous,

This is a long list and I thank you for your contribution. However, is it possible to break this list down a bit by perhaps creating a new post with items you feel are broken vs. feature requests? I am happy to address each but I am afraid it will be a novel by the time I am done in this current format.

Or, for feature enhancements or requests, you are also welcome to contact the product team directly. If you have additional comments specific to the software or its functionality for future consideration, please use the Product Feedback page. How to provide feedback on Autodesk products goes into more detail.

Another great option is to participate in the AutoCAD Customer Council. This is an opportunity for our customers to partner with the AutoCAD development team to improve future releases of AutoCAD by giving continuous feedback on ideas, designs, and early builds.
In order to get involved email autocad.beta@autodesk.com or autocad.lt.council@autodesk.com

Thanks for the response,

Have done the Product Feedback path above.

Item 9. should read Arc Lines not polylines, and indicated the process result:

9. Offsetting arcs lines.... there was a bug in 2013LT that would no offset arcs co-plainer to tangent line, requiring the user to have to identify the arc radius and then fillet the lines to get co-planer line work; possibly fixed in Auto-cad 2018LT? as I don't seem to be able to replicate this in 2018.

Macros? is this possible with AutoCAD 2018 LT?

Not sure how to implement Macros... reading link provided....

It appears that some of your problems are hardware related, and some others are simply unfamiliarity with the application, like creating a layer filter for am inverted list, and still others would require AutoCAD (or Windows) to read your mind, if you move a dialog box off screen how does AutoCAD (or Windows) know you don't really want it there??

Instead of a great long list of issues, post them one at a time and let people answer your questions one at a time.

#11 makes me want to smash my computer daily. It shows the hatch preview perfect but then click and it says it can't do it. WTF  Or it shows the hatch preview correctly and click and it hatches all kinds of other things too. Drives me batty. Either that or preview show right, click and it hatches wrong then try again and  pick a point in a slightly different place and it hatches right. The boundary is either closed or it isn't!!!, so how can it hatch different if you try multiple times. Out of all my gripes with autocad softwares, Hatch is #1.

According to Autodesk Knowledge Network it is. Here is the direct link https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad-lt/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2017/ENU/AutoCAD-LT/files/GUID-D991386C-FBAA-4094-9FCB-AADD98ACD3EF-htm.html

I checked before I posted. I know LT doesn't handle LISP so I checked on the Macros. I work in a vertical product so I wasn't sure. But I still use Macros extensively.

18.

A) I would like to request an additional feature to the Field editor, additional to item 4.

Adding abject within the Field editor is a constant time waster when there are 15 or so objects to enter into the sum formula. These object are either polygons or text field object areas of the polygons where I extract the 'contents' in the Field editor to place into a Table.

B) Being able to band select objects for pre-selected formula operation like Sum.

Or an 'Add mode' shortcut like that when doing an Inquiry Measure Area operation:

eg.
Command: _MEASUREGEOM
Enter an option [Distance/Radius/Angle/ARea/Volume] <Distance>: _area
Specify first corner point or [Object/Add area/Subtract area/eXit] <Object>: a
Specify first corner point or [Object/Subtract area/eXit]: o
(ADD mode) Select objects:
Area = 103.01, Perimeter = 41.95
Total area = 103.01
(ADD mode) Select objects:
Area = 103.01, Perimeter = 41.95
Total area = 83.9

But done within the Field editor.

Re. Macros, I simply don't have the time to sort through and organize Macros, could I suggest the most common and advanced user ones be included in AutoCAD vanilla by default. Surely its worth a page or two in the Help file / CAD Manual Example files.
