Hi,

Which version of CAD are you using?

Prior to AutoCAD 2017, it was not possible to convert a PDF file to a DWG file using AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT. PDF files can only be inserted as underlays (external references). The content can then be traced and scaled to known dimensions, if desired.

With the release of AutoCAD 2017, using the PDFIMPORT command, it is now possible to import PDF content directly into AutoCAD drawings. Lines will become editable geometry and text will become editable text. The accuracy of the resultant AutoCAD content is largely dependent upon the quality of the original PDF, so results may vary. Additionally, PDF underlays in drawings created with previous AutoCAD releases can be converted into editable drawing geometry using the PDFIMPORT command.

Thanks & Best Regards

Cheers,

HI and Welcome to AutoDesk Forum,

you can use PDFIMPORT  command ( for AutoCAD 2017)  to import geometry from a PDF page into the current drawing as AutoCAD objects.

Note: your attachment is empty white paper.

Hi,

sorry to say, but also AutoCAD 2017 can't import a 3D-PDF.

I don't know any application that can do that (but not tried Google now), the best would be to contact the creator of that file and ask for a different format.

Hello,

Thanks alot for your reply, if you look carefully you will see the filesize is about 2.1MB meaning there is a content. I really dont understand why its a blank paper. its a 3Dpdf file of a pump. Attached is a screen shot of the file showing the geometry. Hope this time around its not a blank sheet. Still hoping to find  solution about 3D pdf to dwg conversion.

Cheers

Friend, you will need to find a 3rd party converter, AutoCAD2017 and lower cannot handle this type of conversion. There are a few, doubt the good ones are free, but hey, you can try and find out. here is one https://www.convertcadfiles.com/

If you think it can, post the actual PDF file for someone to try, not a picture of it 🙂

It cannot be done in plain AutoCAD but you can use a third party tool to convert 3D PDF data to a CAD format (e.g. DWG).

This is the result of such conversion of your PDF via a Max plugin as described in http://www.cadforum.cz/cadforum_en/convert-3d-pdf-files-back-to-cad-models-tip11337:

Hey Guys,

The 3D pdf attachment will always appear as a blank page when viewing online, so it is neccessary to download before viewing. First open the file online and it will diaplay a blank page then proceed by clicking the download button on the same page.

Thanks

HI @Anonymous,

I too tried to open the PDF (using my older version of Acrobat) but could not see any content. Is it possible to save it as a flattened PDF? I even tried opening it in Photoshop and Illustrator but with no luck.

One of the points of 3D PDF is the ability to share an intelligent 3D model without the end user having access to the original model.  If the creator isn't willing to share the original content, you'll need to start from scratch.

Unfortunately it is not possible to import & interpret 3D PDF files in AutoCAD and in most other CAD tools. But some types of 3D PDF files may contain 3D geometry that can be re-exported (e.g. in Acrobat or though a 3ds Max plugin). See:
