I have a closed 3D POLYLINE with varying z-values. It represents a surveyed pathway. I extrude it a couple of metres to create a kind-of corridor. However, because I have varying Z-values the extrusion results in a surface, but I want a SOLID. How do I get a top and bottom surface? Or is there a better way of doing this?

Make a closed 2D polyline shape of the cross section of the path then use sweep, referencing the 3D spline path,  to make it a solid.  You can use Boolean union or subtract to see the corridor in your terrain.

The path is not a uniform width, so both sides of the path have been surveyed. Sometimes wider, sometimes narrower, sometimes higher, sometimes lower.

@scott_bolton,

 

I converted your 3D polyline into a solid. See attached. I guessed at the extrusion distance.

 

Steps I used to create the solid:

 

  1. EXTRUDE the 3D polyline. This create a surface extrusion.
  2. SURFPATCH
    1. Use CHAIN option to select edges along top of surface extrusion.
    2. ENTER to accept the default surface
    3. This creates the second surface
  3. SURFPATCH
    1. Use CURVE option to select original 3D polyline.
    2. ENTER to accept the default surface
    3. This creates the third surface.
  4. SURFSCULPT
    1. Select the three surfaces (extrusion and two patch surfaces).

On my PC, it took about two minutes to complete the patching steps and then another five minutes to complete the sculpting step. The sculpt operation joins the surfaces to make a solid.

 

I hope this is understandable. I have included a simple example of the progression steps.

I had used these commands years back but just couldn't remember them. I skipped the SURFPATCH > CHain step by making a vertical copy of the original 3DPOLYLINE. Job done!
