3d orbit goes off the edge of the world

On some, but not all of my model files, AutoCad will set a pivot point for my 3D orbiting which won't allow me to navigate my model.  The view is thrust off of the screen with no way of knowing where I am in the model once I click the mouse.  This will happen, usually sometime after I have first opened the session, but lately it is occurring at the outset.   I pick the command icon for orbit, click the drawing area and everything disappears.  I have tried adjusting distance, selecting the point of origin of rotation and several other options, but still cannot prevent this from happening in certain model files.  What gives?

i experience the same at times.  Whenever this happens, let go of the orbit, grab a few items that you are focused on and enter orbit.  i feel it has to do with the UCS being too far from your pivoting point.  also, make sure you have "ENABLE ORBIT AUTO TARGET" selected. (while in the orbit command, right click and select)
