3D Faces do not turn to a surface

Hi,

 

I have a complicated 3D model that is made of 3d Face elements. It totally looks like, that all these elements are connected, the object is closed. I am trying to turn this into a solid object. So as a first step I try to convert my 3d face elements into surfaces. I select all nearly 61000 of them and apply CONVTOSURFACE command. After I get a message that 362 elements were not converted. What can be the reason?

Also if after this i select a smaller portion of the model, and look at the properties, there is option to select 3D faces or Surfaces. Why are the 3D faces still present in the model. Is that normal?

My first thought was, this 362 elements wouldn't be not 3dfaces.

But:

 Why are the 3D faces still present in the model. Is that normal?

 It would be helpful (for us) to upload a part of the drawing to see what's wrong.

  1. The message generally indicates that you also have other stuff (ex: lines) that can't be converted to surfaces.
  2. The presence of 3dfaces after conversion indicates that delobj may be set to 0 (doesn't delete original objects). This setting can be helpful if you need to use the same source objects for multiple processes but otherwise your drawing gets clogged with the unconverted source objects (3dfaces and surfaces are left in the conversion processes along with various error messages).

1, Well, I thought also that not all my elements are 3d faces. So I selected the whole object part by part (otherwise too many elements), and looked at the properties window. In the drop down menu it indicated that I have only selected 3d faces. So I have not found anything else. For now I am going to disregard the message, and trying to use the Union command also bit by bit, otherwise it crashes.

2, DELOBJ was set to 3, I changed it to -1, it asked me if I wanted to delete original. After hitting yes the 3d faces are no longer there! So that question is solved.

Yes. 61000 faces/surfaces might be too much for surfsculpt to handle. Divide the model with large vertical surfaces that cut through the model, surfsculpt each division, and union.

I picked randomly 2 vertebra's of your earlier thread (spine) and converted both to a 3dsolid successful.

Because I don't want to test all the 50+ parts, tell us whitch part causes the problem(s).

Sorry, I think you posted your comment under the wrong thread. I am not working with a spine, and have not attached any models either.

Because my fist test was unfortunately done with ACAD 2018, I repeated the test with 2014. After converting 4 parts succesfully I decided to create a screencast (see attached link).

I hope the success serie will continue.

Well, I have managed to turn my 3d faces into a surface and made a mesh from it. There were a few objects lying around, that when I clicked on them showed to be 3D faces, however they looked like lines. Those were the ones that did not convert. Bit confused here, but I deleted them. My mesh looks very nice, there are no visible disconnections, however  when i try to turn it into a solid, it is reported not to be watertight. How can I figure out where the problem is? I can not see anything with my naked eye! How to find where my mesh is disconnected, or has holes? Once I found it, I guess I should be able to repair it by MESHCAP, but I need to find it. Some good advice would be really appreciated!
