Solid black blocks printing on paper copies of pdfs created on autocadLT for mac

Having installed all of my HP software for HP officejet 7612 wide format and reinstalled latest updates following an alarming security malware issue message that was coming up on my mac, any colour prints created as pdfs using autocadLT2020 for macs are printing with large black boxes over the entire sheet. This seems to be specifically over any areas of colour on the pdf created as solid colour hatches with transparency created on autocadLT2020 for macs.

The pdfs look perfect on the mac screen and the problem is only with hard/ paper copies printed on the HP A3 printer. This is having a serious impact on my work as a sole practitioner as I have not been able to print hard copies for a number of meetings in the last 2 weeks. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Rob

Welcome to Autodesk Forums!

Hi Robert,

I think you you are facing a known issue with printing PDF files created with the built-in AutoCAD PDF printer - AutoCAD to PDF (*).pc3 or DWG to PDF.pc3.
The problem is in Preview app, and I believe you are trying to print from Preview app. For some reason Preview app prints raster PNG images which are created in PDF output from solid fills with transparency applied.

There are two workarounds:
- If you want to use Preview app for printing - convert PDF files in Preview app to raster images before printing (use menu File with Shift key -> Save As to save PDF to JPG image).
or
- use Acrobat Reader to print such PDF files, they will print correctly without any conversions.

Hi

Thanks for your suggestion.

I have now installed adobe reader and have tried opening the pdfs in reader and then printing from adobe. This still did not work and I am getting the black blocks over the drawing.

I emailed the same pdf to a friend who then printed from her laptop on my computer and the pdf printed perfectly. She is using OS Mojave 10.14.6 whereas I am using OS Big Sur 11.0.1, could this be the problem?

Hi again

Just read my post and realise I made a mistake, when I said a friend printed directly to my computer I meant my printer... it's been a long day!

So in other words she can print from adobe direct to my printer using OS Mojave but for some reason I can't using OS Big Sur...

Hi Robert,

I cannot check on Big Sur now, but what about second workaround?
- Save PDF as JPEG image before printing
Have you tried it?

Hi Maxim

Thanks for get back to me so quickly. Yes saving as a jpeg does work prior to printing which is a useful workaround. Are there no issues in terms of scale on the drawing doing this ie. should it print exactly as it would as a pdf? I am probably showing the limitations of my I.T. knowledge here!

It will be printed exactly as PDF, no scale issues. Use 300 dpi resolution and best quality, when saving to JPEG in Preview app.

@robbruce did you try print the drawing to paper directly in AutoCAD? It might work if the issue is PDF related.
