SHX Font File not opening

Hi! I am using AutoCAD for a college class. I need to upload a file to insert premade fonts for my assignment via AutoCAD. Although, I can see the files but AutoCAD won't let me open them. The error message says, "Cannot find the specified drawing file. Please verify that the file exists." Do you know how I can fix this? I am using AutoCAD for Macbook 2025.

Hi @emma_whiteW4Y7M ,

On the screenshot you attached I see autoCAD settings window and looks like you are trying to change one of the Support Files Search paths - the path to SHX folder.

Can you show the window with the alert you mentioned in your post - "Cannot find the specified drawing file. Please verify that the file exists." At what point does it appear? What are you trying to do at this moment?

Can you provide more details?

Hi, thank you so much for relying to me!!!

The Error message appears when I try and open the SHX file. It takes me directly to AutoCAD with the error message I attached below.

Please let me know if this helps, I am very new to AutoCAD. My Prof. say's she has no idea how to fix this.

Shx files are not drawing files

Dwg files are AutoCAD drawing files

To use shx files with an AutoCAD dwg file use the Style command and create a new text style selecting the shx file as the font and then use the Text or Mtext command to enter text using the new Style you created

@emma_whiteW4Y7M ,

If you want to use specific SHX file provided by your Prof. with some drawing, you need to put this SHX file inside

/Users/emmawhite/Library/Application Support/Autodesk/AutoCAD 2025/R25.0/roaming/@en@/Support/SHXFont

folder, relaunch AutoCAD and open your drawing. Texts in the drawing should now display correctly.

To open the folder I mentioned above - use menu Go -> Go to Folder... in Funder. Copy the path:

/Users/emmawhite/Library/Application Support/Autodesk/AutoCAD 2025/R25.0/roaming/@en@/Support/SHXFont

 paste it to Go to Folder... window and hit Return.

Now you can place the SHX file into the Finder window that opens.

FYI, OP shows that those are already in that folder: simplex.shx & gdt.shx

Hi Paullimapa.

They are in the folder. Although, AutoCAD will not let me open either of them.

@paullimapa ,

simplex.shx and gdt.shx are standard AutoCAD for Mac SHX files, they are in that folder OOTB.

Looks like OP's Prof. sent him a different SHX file.

@emma_whiteW4Y7M ,

You don't need to open ore edit these SHX files, AutoCAD will handle them on its own.

Another way to install SXH files to AutoCAD for Mac:

How to install a font into AutoCAD for Mac

Look for the steps about SHX files.

As I replied. AutoCAD do not open shx files. Have you tried the Style command?

Thank you for this video, paullimapa.

Please look at the screen shot I have attached below. It looks like these are labeled the same as my file? Archstyl & shx.

I need to have these fonts as shown in the attachment below. The attachment is my prof. AutoCAD screen. I should have RMCAD_64, RMCAD_96, etc. Those are not showing in the...      format - text style list.

I guess I am still confused on how to get the preloaded fonts within the Archstyl.shx file.

I apologize for the confusion, I have no idea what I am doing and am trying my best to make sense!

Those are dimension styles and not text styles. Ask your professor to explain the difference. If there are additional custom fonts your professor is using with a dwg then your professor should consider using the etransmit command to create a package that will include all fonts used for you.

Please find Archstyl.shx in the attached archive, extract it to some folder inside your home folder and follow instructions from:

How to install a font into AutoCAD for Mac

Relaunch AutoCAD and open your drawing, now this font will show correctly.
