scaling issue autocad 2013

scaling issue autocad 2013

I received a dwg file from an architect that I'm having trouble with.

To illustrate the issue - I have a 16'3 line drawn and dimensioned. When I try to draw another line beside it that matches it's size, the line is in fact 412'9 long. Screen shot attached for clarity.

The drawing is apparently at a 1/4" scale but I didn't realize you could draw at a scale in model space? I thought everything was 1:1 until you plot...

Welcome to Autodesk Forums!

Hi,

The dimension you see on the line you are measuring could have some overrides. For example the dimension text could be overwritten, or some scale factor can be used in this particular dimension object.

Can you attach here the drawing or a part of it with the problem line and dimension?

Maxim

Thanks for replying Maxim. I attached the file.

To clarify - the 16'3 is the true to scale measurement of the actual space...not sure if that was clear. So the dimension text is correct, and the dynamic input is what's off scale.

True dimension is 412'-9" what you get from DIST command:

Distance = 412'-9", Angle in XY Plane = 0, Angle from XY Plane = 0
Delta X = 412'-9", Delta Y = 0'-0", Delta Z = 0'-0"

But the current dimension style you are using to put dimensions has 0.039370078740157 Scale Factor:

2016-02-16 07-38-08 Modify Dimension Style: GENERATED_STYLE__1.png

and distance in each dimension you put with this Dim Style calculated as follows: "Real Dimension" * 0.039370078740157

So you get:

412'-9" * 0.039370078740157 = 16'-3"

If you want real distance in the dim text, you need to set Scale factor in the dim style to 1.

Thank you. That has confused me some more though...because that line (stair) exists in reality at 16'3 so do I need to scale the whole drawing to get it to reflect that, versus the 412' length...? If so, how do I do that?

Your help is VERY appreciated!

You can scale the whole drawing with SCALE command using "Reference" option of SCALE command.
Start SCALE command, select all objects you want to scale, use one of the endpoints of the horizontal line you mentioned as Base point, than choose "Reference" option, than when AutoCAD will ask for the reference length - pick Base point again, than pick on the other endpoint of existing line, than type new length (16'3 in your case) and hit Return.

Specify reference length <412'-9">: Specify second point:
Specify new length or [Points] <412'-9">: 16'-3"
