Problems importing solidworks files on Mac version of Autocad 2015+2017

Hello!

I've been trying to import a solidworks file into both Autocad 2015 and 2017 with no success... I am running it in Mac OS.

I have tried the import command and following the various instructions around the support site, but it within any sort of pull down menu I can find the

.sldasm and .sldprt extensions are not available, and when I try an any file option, importing it does nothing. Or seems to do nothing.

Any pointers?

Oh, also the Solidworks file is 2017 version apparently.

Thanks,

C

Hi @squirrelerriuqs,

You need to have IGS files from Solidworks to import into AutoCAD. The other file types (parts and assemblies) can be brought into Inventor  and then exported to AutoCAD.

If you have a file or files you would like me to look at, please attach them to a post.

Hi C,

AutoCAD for Mac can import only ASIS solids in SAT format.
You need to use other converter to convert Solidworks file to DWG or to DXF.

Thanks @maxim_k,

I noticed the Mac part after I posted my answer (then moved the thread).

Aloha!

Thanks for the quick reply guys.

Just installed Inventor via an extremely slow internet connection (GAARGH!) onto a windows VM, and it still doesn't seem to be digging doing the file conversion  (a big red error appears in the generated html report).

Doing a bit of rtfm ing now to see if its me being completely inept at using something new.

Thanks again.

Hi @squirrelerriuqs, In Inventor, click on new Part and then Import. If that doesn't work, try attaching one of your files for me to look at. If I can get it to work I will make a Screencast for you to show you the steps.

Hi @squirrelerriuqs,

NO worries - I couldn't get them into Inventor or Inventor Pro either!  All the files returned errors.  When they are exported however in IGS or STEP format then they come into Inventor just fine.

Capture.PNG

Where are these files originating? Can you have them sent to you in either of these formats?

Mega.

I wasn't being a complete buffoon then... :cara_con_una_leve_sonrisa:

I drew the front/rear/layout of this in autocad 2015 and then sent it off to a place to get manufactured, (Hooray!)...

I have to modify some of the internal parts I drew to fit around the fixings/case bits they drew, and so got this sent back to me to deal with that... I am fairly certain they can send me a dwg/dxf/something else if I ask politely, but I figured that I should be able to deal with it myself using the tools I had to hand and the power of google. (£$%^&*^%&*^%^$&!!!.) I was fairly certain it was just me doing something stupid...

Its raised a few questions about CAD formats and importing and why those things are different between mac and windows versions of autocad, but I suspect thats a can of worms that I probably should know just enough to do what I want to do!!

I'm guessing it has something to do with the version it was saved in (I think Solidworks 2017??)...

I'll give them a shout tomorrow and see what appears.

Thanks a bazzillliionnnn. I was definitely stuck.

Yea - you aren't crazy!

There is something strange with their files. I was able to open it in 2016 Solidworks too which makes this even stranger.  If you find out what they used to work with the files or the version of Solidworks that would be helpful to avoid this in the future.

Hi @squirrelerriuqs,

I am checking back to see if my post helped you with your problem or if you need additional assistance or information.  Were you able to determine what your vendor was doing to create or export the files?
