Problem with drawing a line in 90° while putting in a distance

Hi,

i'm having a problem with drawing a normal line while ortho is on and i wanna give a distance.

(with macbook air, auto cad 2016)

drawing a line in a 90° angle is working just fine, as long as i don't give in a distance.

i click on my end line (using snap), want to draw a line (while ortho is on!) in a 90° angle, but from the moment i hold in shift, to enter my distance the line should be, it almost always goes in a different angle. (but like just NOT 90°, it doesn't snap to a different point close by or anything, it just seems to go crooked for a couple of degrees)

Does anyone know how i can stop this?

thanks in advance!

I don't know if an AutoCAD for Mac has another handling, but in a Window AutoCAD you don't need to press the Shift key.

hi,

i just tried it and if I don't use the shift button while typing my numbers, i get the symbols (don't have the extra numbers on keyboard, so have to use the ones above on the keyboard).

also i don't know if the holding the shift is the problem .... it always makes the line crooked just a bit, sometimes not even visible unless i zoom in a lot.

Best regards

Hi Joen,

Are you using AZERTY keyboard by chance?
If yes, then AFAIK to input numbers on it you need to press Shift button and this can conflict with AutoCAD long Shift press when you use direct input. In AutoCAD if you will press and hold Shift button with direct input method it works as Ortho toggle: if you have Ortho mode enabled, then it turns off Ortho temporary until you release Shift key, if you have Ortho disabled - it turns Ortho mode ON temporary.
Am I correct?

If I am correct, then try to turn off Ortho mode, then when you need to use Ortho with direct numeric input simply use Shift key (you need it to type numbers), just hold it little bit longer before you start to input numbers, this will allow AutoCAD to switch to Ortho mode temporary.

Another way is to switch from "AZERTY" keyboard layout to “Français – numérique” keyboard layout, this will allow you use Caps Lock instead of Shift key for numeric input:
Turn on Caps Lock and you can input numbers from the keyboard without Shift key. Then you will be able to use Ortho mode switch on the Status Bar to enable Ortho and use direct input.

You also will be able to use Polar Tracking:

with 90 degree angle for Ortho input.
