I updated my AutoCAD 2015 and there is still the issue with my computer and the other computer being able to open the same file without one of us getting a read only pop-up. Im not sure what is causing this.

Hi @Anonymous,

Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

File locking is handled by the operating system.

Can you please provide some detail about your workstations, network, server, NAS, etc?

This sounds like an OS issue

Does this happen on multiple machines?

Are you both trying to access the file with AutoCAD?

The computers are Mac's:  One computer is running OS X Yosemite version 10.10.5 with ACAD LT 2015 on the latest update. The other computer is running OS X El Capitan v 10.11.15 with ACAD LT 2016 on the latest update. The files are stored on a shared folder on a Synology.

Autodesk doesn't support the use of NAS devices.  Probably because stuff like this happens.

are you opening the files through autoCAD or by clicking on the file in the folder?

HI @Anonymous,

Ouch! I have seen this configuration quite a few times. Unfortunately, a NAS is not an implementation that I can support. The designated network solution that can be supported is a Windows network which uses SMB protocol. You can experiment with forcing different protocols on your network but to date I have not heard any conclusive solution to making this work properly. The Synology NAS devices appear to be good reliable hardware but unfortunately their implementation of SMB is not totally compliant to match the Windows network. You might reach out to the manufacturer to see if they might be able to offer suggestions on this issue.

One workaround that I have heard of is to work local and then use a utility to sync it back to the server. This is less than ideal in my opinion.

I will move your thread to the Mac forum so you might get more input from other forum members.  I hope you can find a solution for this configuration.

What would be the ideal way for multiple users to have access to a file?

Hi @Anonymous,

Depending on the number of users, you should consider a Windows network.  This might be inexpensive and easy approach for a handful of users.

Macs seem to work fine on this configuration and should also resolve your file sharing issues.

Others have tried doing this on DropBox and other online storage but you can run into synchronization errors and issues here too.
