Making changes in model space without changing other sheets- layouts

Hi,

I've created a few new layouts (Each contains different layer), and up to here it all works fine. But when I return to model space and change the layer currently displayed, it changes all the layers displayed in all other layouts to the one I chose in model space.

Is there anything to do with it ? I searched all over the internet for this issue and nothing comes up.

Any ideas ?

Thanks,

Tom

Explain in more detail what exactly you did when you "change the layer currently displayed" and how exactly did the layouts change.

Hi, thank you for the reply !
What I meant is that in the model space I choose another layer (through the layer manager) and the result was that the same layer displayed in all other layouts (instead of the ones I chose earlier).
Hope that makes more sense.

Attached a short video that explains the issue.

Any changes you make in modelespace appear in paperspace layouts: viewports in paperspace are just windows into modelspace.

But... if you just want to hide certain layers inside viewports in each paperspace layout then you need to go inside each viewport and set a layer override to have it frozen/off. BUT you have to keep ALL layers on/thawed in modelspace for it all to work, and/or you need to work through viewports only.

Clear as mud yet? Let us know how new you are to AutoCAD so we can tailor future answers to better suit your needs friend.

Hi,
Thank you again for the reply !
I’m new to AutoCAD.
What I’m trying to do is to be able to make changes in the Model tab (I’ve been calling it “Model space” but that might be wrong) and still have the layouts stay as they are without applying the changes I’ve made in the model.

The video I attached to the previous reply shows exactly the issue.

Is there any command or maybe a property that I missed who could help me do that?

Viewports in Layouts are just windows looking into the modelspace area.

When you change the modelspace layers settings, all the viewports are affected: that is what a window does, it simply shows you what is on the other side.

What you need to do is thaw/turn on all the layers in modelspace and work inside your viewports instead: or get in the habit of turning on/thawing all layers in modelspace when you are done working there before you go back to your layouts/viewports.

Got it, I’ve tried that but I’ll try again.
The only thing that bothers me is that I’ve been told that in the Windows version of AutoCAD you can somehow disconnect the model from the layouts in a way changes in the model won’t effect the layouts.
So just to be sure - is there a way to do that in the Mac version ?

Hi Tom,

>>>>>in the Windows version of AutoCAD you can somehow disconnect the model from the layouts in a way changes in the model won’t effect the layouts

I'm not sure that it is true.
What do they mean by "disconnect"?
Can you elaborate?

Not correct, modelspace and paperpace viewports work exactly the same in both OS versions of AutoCAD.

Hi Maxim,

I’ve been told that in the Windows version you can create new layouts and edit them as you like (in model space), and then return to the Model tab (not model space in the layout) and make changes in it, like turning off some of the layers without affecting the layouts you created. Or with simpler words - the layouts display won’t change (Wich is exactly what I’m trying to do in my Mac version).

I hope that’s more understandable.

Hi,

I think I’ve confused you, I’m talking about making changes in the Model tab (not modelspace “state” in the layout, but the main tab of the drawing).
A few posts earlier I uploaded a video with an example of my issue, maybe the video will help shedding some light on it.

Anyway, I explained what I meant again in the reply to Maxim (in my previous post). I hope that’s clearer.

Hi Tom,

If you will change layer visibility in Model (turn off or freeze layer), while you are in the "Model tab" as you call it, all changes will be immediately applied to all viewports in all Layouts. And this is true for all AutoCAD versions regardless platform - Mac or PC.

On the other hand you can freeze (hide) layers for individual Viewports in Layouts using VP Freeze property. And this will not affect Layers visibility in Model.

Layers states feature you showed in the screencast works independently for Model and Paper spaces, so if you change Layer State in Model (not inside viewport whole you are in the one of the Layout tabs), then changes will be visible in all viewports in all Layouts.
