Limit Tolerances - Upper and lower limit both positive values,

Hi there,

I am trying to apply limit tolerances on my drawing.  For some of the components I want to show dimensions for I want both the upper and lower limit to add (be positive values) to the dimension.  I cant get AutoCAD to make both the upper and lower positive..  It wants the lower to be negative.

Eg,

Diameter is 16 (basic diameter)

I want to show the following:

upper: + 0.023

lower: + 0.012

The result I'm trying to achieve is;

(Diameter symbol) 16.023

(Diameter symbol) 16.012

This will be used for holes and shafts etc.  The above example is for a "n6" Heavy Push Fit (for a brass bush).

Likewise, some other components require two negative numbers so its the same problem again just the other way around.  I have tried trying to edit the dimensions once they're there but it wont allow it.

Also - regarding the diameter symbol... AutoCAD thinks that the edge of my round Bush (i.e. a striaght line) is a straight line.  Is there any way of getting the diameter symbol in there too even though I'm not dimensioning an actual circle?

Maybe its a case of entering it manually and trying to establish a little system myself to try and make it look consistent.. yelpRobot surprised

Thanks !!!

1/ After you put diameter dimension - select it and in Properties Palette change tolerance lower limit to negative.

2/ You can add diameter symbol to the default dimension text - double-click dim text, move cursor to the left position, than type "%%C" (without quotes) from keyboard - this will give you diameter symbol.

Hi Maxim,

Thank you for taking the time to respond !

Maybe I need to explain myself a bit better..  The problem I am having is not a case of needing to indicate a "+"  (or "-").  The problem is this:

AutoCAD is automatically subtracting the lower limit value I input into the:

Dimension style manager, modify, tolerances, method, limits, prescision 0.000, Upper value 0.0230, Lower value 0.012.

I have attached a screen shot to hopefully explain it a bit better.

My goal is being able to end up with this result:

Upper limit diameter: 16.023

Lower limit diameter: 16.012 [THIS IS WHERE AutoCAD DISPLAYS THE INCORRECT VALUE of 15.88.  AutoCAD has automatically assumed the Lower limit is a "-" value, I want in this case for Lower limit to also be "+" as well as the Upper limit ]

I tried your suggestion and yes I can apply a "-" or "+" in front of either the top or bottom (one or the other, not both..) but AutoCAD wont allow me to edit the numerical value itself unfortunately. This is why I am stuck becuase I cant find a way to display the correct actual number.

The edits I CAN achieve is placing a number or letter or symbol etc IN FRONT, OR AFTER the dimension displayed (either the top or bottom, not both the top and bottom), but I can not edit/change (i.e. fix) the number itself.  If its says 15.988, thats it, I can not change it manually to the number I want (which is 16.012).

On the other hand I also have other dimensions that require both the upper and lower limits to BOTH be MINUS the tolerance values, so I will have the same issue in that case too 😞

I hope there is a way!?? Thank you again for your time - once again !!! 🙂

Thanks !!!

EDIT: I have since discovered one step towards my issue; the 'input text manually' box that is now ticked [dimension style, modify, fit tab, fine tuning section, place text manually tick box]. This has helped some.  It still doesnt allow you to edit/adjust the existing number, you have to type both lines in, and unfortunately when you do that they no longer line up as neatly so you can tell that its been input manually which to me infers you had to override the info whcih probably means your dimensions are out...  - even though they're not. Argh.  Fingers crossed there is an answer out there...?  THANKS !

I meant you can edit lower limit (add "-" to it) via Properties palette after you put dimension to the drawing.

In this case AutoCAD will allow to use negative value, which will give you the result you need:

Helllllooooo, thank you thank you thank you thank you - have I thanked you today?  THANK YOU!!!

Yes, I have followed your instruction - successfully this time.  Sorry to not get it, thank you so much for your patience as well as for helping me out and once again for your solid knowledge 🙂

Fair enough - Double negative makes a positive , but the trick is only from the properties palette, not in the dimension style manager. Phew 🙂
