Layer State not saving / VP FREEZE inside VIEWPORT (AutoCAD 2015 for Mac)

I have two questions...I transitioned from AutoCAD Architecture 2009 for Windows to AutoCAD 2015 for Mac and have run into yet another frustrating AutoCAD feature that seems to have regressed.

1. Can someone please explain the new layer state system to me?!

I'm trying to do something as simple as create a layer state for a house FLOOR PLAN and REFLECTED CEILING PLAN. Well it used to be you'd set up the layers you'd like, go into Layer State and hit the Add/+ button, name the new state, save and exit. If you wanted to update a Layer State all you had to do was change the layers and go back into LS and hit Save.

I've tried both methods of going into LAYERSTATE, hitting the + button and then SAVE/CLOSE. This works once every 10 tries and when it does it'll randomly change layer colors that I've never assigned anywhere. I've also tried LAYERSTATESAVE, created the LS and hit ADD. This method doesn't work either. What am I missing here?

2. The second question is in reference to VP FREEZE. I used to be able to set up a floor plan layout sheet with all the layers thawed, lets call this A2.1. Then I'd duplicate the layout for the reflected ceiling plan, sheet A5.1. I'd then go back to sheet A2.1, double click into the viewport and using FREEZE, freeze all the reflected ceiling plan layers and PS out of the viewport. Then I'd go to sheet A5.1 and repeat the steps for the reflected ceiling plan. When I did this all the layers would VP FREEZE correctly. I could go back to model space and all the layers would still be on. I would use LAYERSTATE to work in the floor plan or RCP that I wanted.

Well now in 2015, I double click into a viewport and start freezing layers and the changes are world wide, all viewports and model space. Is there a variable that I'm missing as I'd prefer to do it this way instead of running through the list of layers and selecting the VPFREEZE icon for each of the 50+ layers.

Hi Bill,

1. About Layer States.

You can try this workflow - adjust all layer settings you want to be saved in new Layer State, than use LAYERSTATESAVE to save your current layer settings to new Layer State. BTW, you can also use LAYERSTATE command here. The main idea is at first make all settings for layer(s), than save Layer State by giving it some name.

Later you can edit each of saved Layer States in Layer State Manager (LAYERSTATE command). You need to select Layer State you saved previously than use "gear" menu at the bottom of the Layer States list to edit Layer State (this will open new window, where you can adjust all settings for all layers included in Layer State you are trying to edit).

2. About freezing layers in viewport:

You can use LAYFRZ command to VP-FREEZE layers inside viewports, but you need to check settings for Viewport option of LAYFRZ command - it should be "Vpfreeze" instead of default "Freeze":

Command: LAYFRZ

Current settings: Viewports=Off, Block nesting level=None

Select an object on the layer to be frozen or [Settings/Undo]: Settings

Enter setting type for [Viewports/Block selection]: Viewports

In paper space viewport use [Freeze/Vpfreeze] <Freeze>: Vpfreeze

Select an object on the layer to be frozen or [Settings/Undo]

Command:

This setting will be saved in AutoCAD for all drawings until you change it again.
