Lag in Layout Paper space

System:

iMac Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017

Processor: 3,5 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5

Graphics: Radeon Pro 575 4GB

Memory: 24 GB 2400 MHz DDR4

macOS: Ventura 13.6.7

Software:

Autocad LT for Mac 2024.0.1

Product Version: U.61.M.205

Problem:

Some layouts become very laggy, without obvious reason.

When first created and set up, the - latter - affected layouts run perfectly well. No problems at all, either in paper space or model space. After a while, they get affected by a heavy lag. The lag exists only in paper space. When entering model space the lag disappears, only to reappear after returning in paper space.

The lag, affecting greatly the cursor’s movement, makes selecting and double-clicking a real challenge.

One interesting point is that the affected layouts have not been edited after their initial creation: I create a new layout, set it up, and then leave it unedited while drawing in model progresses. After some consequent saves and reloads of the file, the problem appears.

Another interesting point is that the lag disappears temporary when dragging elements (in paper space), during the process of a command (like move, copy, et.c.).

I have also observed that when trying to edit a value of an entity, in the affected layout (in paper space), in the Properties window, the fields keep continuously reseting themselves to the previous value, with a rate of some hundreds of milliseconds. It is like something forces the affected layouts in a perpetual refresh…

Troubleshooting (unsuccessful):

I’ve tried all three settings (0, 1, 2) in the LAYOUTREGENCTL command to no avail.

I’ve tried all possible settings for the GRAPHICSCONFIG command, with no result.

I tried deleting all the entities present in the affected layouts (viewports, blocks, poly lines et.c.), but the lag was still present, in the - now - empty layouts.

Workaround:

The described lag does not affect plotting, and thus is not of a great concern, until when changes are needed in the layout. In most cases I take the time to delete it and create a fresh version of it. And everything works perfectly fine, until the next time the problem reappears out of nowhere…

Final thoughts:

I’ve been living with this annoyance for some years. After my initial, brief and unsuccessful troubleshooting, I decided that following the workaround described above was preferable, than investing more time in searching for a permanent fix.

But the problem has now become intolerable. I’ve already spent some workhours looking for a solution in various forums and sites, and tried out various solutions, but nothing has worked for me so far. Nor I’ve found any information that could explain the source of the problem.

Hi @alkis_kalantidis ,

Why haven't you installed the latest updat- 2024.1.2 Hotfix - yet?

Do you use external references in your drawings? If yes - where do you store them? On a local or on a network drive?

Can you share one of your drawings here?

@maxim_k , @pendean ,

Thank you for your response. As per your advice, I installed the latest hotfix and restarted, but the problem persists.

@maxim_k , when I use xRefs, those are stored locally.

I'm attaching a sample file. The file used to have another drawing attached, but even after detaching it, the lag is still there.

Thanks for the DWG file: I'm not able to replicate any cursor lag in model or paperspace here. What steps or processes should we be trying to trigger that? I tried what you initially posted, not seeing anything.

Where exactly do you store your DWG files when you work on them on your Mac?

Do you have TimeMachine backup or something similar running?

Hi @alkis_kalantidis ,

I tried to open your drawing in 2024 version of AutoCAD for Mac and can confirm that I see lags in the "Pres_Ground" layout.

But if I open your drawing in 2023 or 2025 versions of AutoCAD for Mac I don't see lags at all.

I also tried to create new Layout in your drawing with the same contents as yours and I don't see lags in it.

Can you try Layout1 in the attached drawing?

@pendean ,

No particular steps should be followed to trigger the lag. It should be present from the moment you load the file.

I'd also like to remind that it is not just a cursor lag. As I described in my initial post, the fields in the Properties Inspector seem to be in a state of constant refresh.

@maxim_k ,

I tried Layout1, as you proposed, and it runs smoothly. But, as I mentioned in my first post, that's the workaround I usually follow: recreate the layout from scratch.

@maxim_k , @pendean , thank you for your time. I'll keep addressing the lag by recreating the lag affected layouts from the beginning, as it is not impeding me from working on the drawing. But I'm still really curious about the cause of the lag, as I've never managed to cause it on purpose... It looks like it is random, but there's no such thing, right?

Hi @alkis_kalantidis ,

You are on subscription. Isn't it?

Upgrade to 2025 version and there will be no lags.
