DWG file is not valid

I'm using the latest version of AutoCAD Mac and the latest OS on my Mac Studio. My files are stored on a NAS Raid drive. I'm suddenly seeing "file is not valid" errors when trying to open a DWG file. (I can rename the BAK file of the drawing to S=DWG and it always opens.) I also frequently see my files become read-only while they're open. This hasn't happened before either. Any Idea what's changed or how I can avoid this?

"file not valid" is not the same as read-only: the former means you've lost the file, it is corrupt.

You could try RECOVER command to open the problem DWG file, or use INSERT command to try and bring in to another file, but be prepared for that not to work either.

NOTE: read-only is a file location lock / feature added by that location's governing OS, aka you NAS is locking you out from editing. AutoCAD requires you to have full read-write-rename-delete access to all folders that contain your DWG files, and that connection needs to be 100% uninterrupted (your NAS can't snooze ever, neither can your laptop/computer).

Curious are you running some kind of backup software on that NAS drive which maybe causing some if the dwg files to become corrupted?

No, nothing new. I’ve been using Elephant Drive for years with no issue.

I understand they are not the same, it’s just that both have issues been popping up recently when they never have in the past.

I’ve tried the methods you describe without success. While it seems odd that renaming the BAK file to DWG opens the file without issue.

I was not aware of the snooze issue, I’ll investigate my settings.
Thanks!

There you go, a possible clue to help you explore and try to discover what changed to put it back: your NAS has support options worth trying
