Compatibility issues with macOS 10.12 Sierra

Basically, this is a question for AutoCAD personnel -  Why is AutoCAD (mac version) not truly compatible with macOS 10.12 Sierra?. I am use a 16GB 2016 macbook pro and have to “force close” at least twice in a day as the machine hangs when working in CAD 2017. I’ve downgraded and tried with 2015, and 2014. But the issues remain the same. Apple has collected all the logs from my machine and has certified the mac as normal. according to Apple, this is a ‘third party software’ issue. Can anyone help?.

Thanks.

Afraid to pose your question in the MAC forum for some reason? No one here in the WIndows forum is going to answer that one https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-for-mac/ct-p/3011

Hi Shekhar,

I'm also working in AutoCAD for Mac all day long, but don't have such issues as you.
Maybe the case is in the drawings which you edit? Are they very complex? Where they were created? In AutoCAD for Mac or in AutoCAD for Windows, maybe in some of AutoCAD verticals?

Hi Maxim
Thanks for your response. This issue that I face is irrespective of the complexity of the drawing. However, I work on mac, while all the PCs in my office network are windows. Nevertheless, I face these issues even when the drawing I am working on is exclusively to my Mac.
An extremely frustrating experience from which I don’t see any way out. Apple is firm that it’s a ‘third party software’ issue.
One thing though, my Mac, though a 16GB machine, does not have a dedicated graphics card. Could that be an issue, you think ?.
Thanks again.

Not sure.
I have 13" Macbook Pro (2015) with integrated graphics card connected to external 4K monitor and don't have problems with graphics.
Can you tell when AutoCAD crashes? Are these crashes reproducible? Or they are random?
Do you use a lot of hatch objects? Which Visual Style are you using in your drawings?

Hi Maxim I use AutoCAD LT 2017 on my 16GB, 15” Mac with an on-board Intel Iris pro graphics card. Though, almost repetitive in nature, most crashes are random and I think, rather difficult to try and reproduce / simulate. As to hatching, I almost don’t use any. Thanks.

Is it possible to attach here one of your typical drawings where crashes occur?

Hi @Anonymous,

I am sorry that you are having these issues with AutoCAD for Mac. I run three different versions along with LT product and honestly, I have never had it crash or lock up.  I don't think this is a hardware issue so that leaves us with possible driver errors or conflicts perhaps with other applications that you are running concurrently.

I suggest that you launch the Activity Monitor and see what else is running during a normal AutoCAD session. That might help to track down what is causing this behavior.

I would also like to see if this is perhaps drawing related as @maxim_k suggests.

Hi John
Thank you for your concern. Everything’s been normal the few times that l’ve run the activity monitor during the Apple support sessions. Normally, the only parallel applications I run are word (‘office’ Mac version) and mails. But mails, seldom as a parallel application, having gotten to know Mac’s issues with exchange server.
However, though 16GB, my Mac does not have a dedicated graphics card. But then, I do only drawing reviews and checks, the main drawings being done by the assisting team.
Will now try the only recourse, as offered by apple service centre, to format the Mac (by Apple) and reload Autocad ( by me).
One thing though, I am new to Mac and only 4 months into it.

Thanks.

Hi @Anonymous,

Are you planning on doing the upgrade to High Sierra also?  I suggest dragging your feet on that a bit even though it will be available Monday. I would prefer that we get this issue sorted out before we introduce another variable.

I will try to be available online this weekend if you decide to proceed with the rebuild. Make sure that you have backed up all your data - perhaps use Time Machine as well as manually copying files to another disk (never too careful).

Have a good weekend.

Hi Shekhar,

Be careful with High Sierra. Don't upgrade your current macOS until Autodesk will release an Update to AutoCAD for Mac to ensure compatibility with new OS.

For now you even will not be able to install AutoCAD on High Sierra, because the installer does not allow to install AutoCAD for Mac on new APFS.

Hi John

I am fairly new to forums thus may not be posting right. Please bear with me if so. Your advice couldn't be more valuable!. Have had my share of sleepless nights on the quintessential ios devices before :-)!. The Mac's gone today and may back within this week. Will stick to native ios and reinstall AutoCAD 2017. Will post after using it for a couple of day on some heavily rendered files. I really appreciate your readiness to help and your concern.

Thanks again and have a great weekend yourself.

Regards

Shekhar.

Hi Maxim

Am new to forums in general and may not be posting right. My apologies if I'm doing so. Will exercise absolute prudence with High Sierra. Thanks there :-).  Have given the Mac to Apple service and hope to get it back within a week. Will use for some time and post subsequently. Also, as suggested by you, will load a typical drawing file. I've quite a few videos recorded so identifying one shouldn't be a problem. My sincere thanks to you and John for your time, help and concern. Have a great weekend.

regards

Shekhar.
