Block editor - coming up automatically

Hi ,

I think this is a stupid question but I cant seem to get it working as it used to so...

I am facing an issue where every time I double click on a block (my main title block that I use when I create new layouts that includes a boarder, name, date etc), it goes into 'Block editor' mode.  It didnt used to.  Before (and on only some blocks, not others???) when I double clicked on a block, the enhanced attribute editor list would pop up which is great, I would fill in the relivant info (eg name of draing, date etc) and that would be that.  Now, the block editor is opening, then when I go to shut the block editor I am asked a bunch of questions regarding redefining blocks yes or no etc.  I dont want this to happen, I just want to update the enhanced attributer editor list and be on my merry way as per usual.   I have enabled something or changed something and... help please ?

Thanks....

Hi,

Such behavior (opening Block Editor after double clicking on the block) means that the block you double click on either doesn't contain attributes or attribute defenitions in block have "Constant" property.
Here is screenshot of Properties palette inside block editor:

Hi Maxim,

Thanks for getting back to me.  I have looked at the properties for each of the attributes and checked to see if constant was ticked and it is not on any of them unfortunately.. It must be something else.. I'm wracking my brains of what I could have done..

"Lock" was ticked for one of the attributes so I unticked it, then made a new block (write blcok) and then inserted the new block but it still opened uop block editor.

I have attached a few more pics to hopefully shed some light. Is there anything else that comes to mind that could be causing this issue?

Thank you so much for the suggestion and help !!

Looks like you have one block (with attributes) inserted inside the other block, so you cannot edit attributes in nested block.

You're right, I must have accidentally set this up trying to figure out how to add attributes.  So does this mean that block editor will open every time I doible click on that block now?

I'm having difficulty with creating attributes correctly.  I can not tell what is the original block and what is the new one that is nested.   I would really appreciate it if you could point out how you were able to pick this if you wouldnt mind please?

Thank you so much for helping out with this! (again !!)

Thanks 🙂

Yes

You attached screenshot with block selected inside Block Editor, so I figured out that you nest one block into other.

If you need to add additional attributes to the existing block you need to open original block (which behaves correctly when you double-click on it) in Block editor and add attribute definitions inside block editor using ATTDEF command.
Than you need to reinsert block to see new attributes in it or edit it with BATTMAN command.

Hi Maxim,

Thank you for your guidance !!

I'm sorry but I'm still running into trouble.  I have tried the following but still have not magaed to get it working corrcetly:

You have helped so much already, and Im pretty sure going off what you have told me that its the nut behind the wheel - not a problem with AutoCAD.  I totally understand if you dont have time to help me with this any further..

If you are able to help me more (THANK YOU!!), and here is whats happening:

When I open a new drawing based on the template that contains my original working title block, (the one where i double click ion it and the advanced attribute list pops up ready to be filled in)  , I go to layout,( and paperspace), highlight the bock and type in the comman line "blockeditor", enter.

"0" is coming up saying read only.  I try not high lighting the block and still the same read only message.

So i created a new block and select exactly the original block (so when I select it it looks like one object).  I save it in my Blocks folder eg "Title Block A3.dwg".

Then I open a new drawing , create a new layout, insert the new block I've just created.  Double click on it and it goes into Block Editor mode 😞

So the only block that is working correctly seems to be read only in block editor.

I did not create the working block, I just have a template that is pretty much that title block.

So I go ahead and try anyway with the new block that WILL open in block editor, use ATTDEF to add a couple of attributes, then make another block ;

w, write block etc

save that eg "Title Block 1.dwg,

Then i open a new drawing,

create a new layout,

insert my new block Title Block 1.dwg

double click on it and:

it opens in block editor 😞

so I double click on one of the attributes and it opens up each attribute individually rather than compiled into one list.

Thank you again for all your help - i understand if you have not made it this far though... but if you have THANK YOU !!!!!!!!

one other thing, if I open eg "Title Block 1.dwg" as a drawing, (rather than insert it as a block), so it opens in model space which is not ideal at all, but, it works perfectly: i.e. the attributes window pops open with the list compliled into one list.

It's when I insert it as a block that i am having all the problems.

Thanks again ! ! !

Seems like our problems might be related, I dont know.

When I want to edit a block, i am in the habit of selecting the block first, then entering BE for block editor.  It then opens up the Block Editor dialogue box, with the selected block already highlighted, and all i have to do is hit enter to go into the block editor.  For some reason, the selection is not working anymore, and I have to scroll down a list a mile long to find the block name I want to edit.

Hi,

Please verify PICKFIRST system variable, it should be set to 1.
Than you will be able to preselect block, type BE and selected block will open in Block Editor.

Hi Maxim,
I run to the same problem state above...the block editor just open up automatically when I click on a random block that I created. No no attribute on it. Its very annoying to always close the block editor and waste of time. The only solution I found to correct partially this problem is to change the variable of " BLOCKEDITLOCK to 1" but with that...it also mean if i need to edit a block I need to change the variable back to '0" ....any other solution you help me with? any variable i should be changing???

FYI Im using autocad Lt 2021 Mac... this problem never occur to me before....

Thks in advance!!

Hi @souk54QXD ,

Can you check your mouse?

Looks like it issues double click even when you single click on block.

Did this problem start showing up unexpectedly?
Or you have it from the beginning?
If the first, you can try to Reset AutoCAD to defaults.
