Some of AutoCAD users may have access to the El Capitan preview version, and would like to test AutoCAD on it. Please kindly post any of your findings in this thread, that would help other users and also the AutoCAD team.

Please include the following info in your posts for reference:

-OS X version(for example, DP1 15A178w)

-AutoCAD version

Hi everyone,

Just an update, El Capitan is not yet officially supported by AutoCAD for Mac, however all future updates regarding El Capitan compatibility will occur in this Autodesk Knowledge Network article

I found that if you hold shift while AutoCAD 2015 for MAC is starting up it works, tried on Macbook Pro 2011, Macbook Pro 2015, Macbook air 2015.

Hello everyone,

This has been a real learning experiance.  Here is what I believe you have to do to inimize down time.  Its not very difficult, but I was back up and running in far less time than I thought.  I didnt use Time machine, had I this would not be an issue, so first bit of advice is start using time machine.

You can follow all the instructions here:

you can follow the instructions on any google search for "how to do a clean install of yosemite"

In summary:

I purchased a 1TB (you dont need that much) external hard drive.

Use the disk utility to format the drive to a mac-os journaled partition

Download or re-download Yosemite from the app store

Download a program called diskmaker X (very easy way to make a bootable drive of yosemite)

**I had a smaller external harddrive that I keep all my music on, and I had soem extra room on it, so I copied all my files that are not in drop box, and I even had enough room to copy my dropbox "projects" files to it as well.  When I re-installed dropbox and it started downloading and synching my files, I paused it, replaced the "projects" folder with the already copied folder and dropbox thought I had already synched everything and I was good to go.  No waiting to download everything.

Re-installing autocad was easy but time consuming as it  had to update itself 4 times, but I was up and running.

I re-started the computer and held down the option key.  Mac gave me the option to choose what disk to boot from, and I selected my new Yosemite boot drive.  I did have to erase my existing harddrive during this process as it still had El capitan on it.  I used the disk utility program from the upper menu and it was easy.

I use the external hardrive for time machine now.  This will not happen again.

You had the better part of a year to ensure compatibility and the Knowledge Base says it'll be weeks before you put out a hotfix? What gives?

Starting ACAD isn't the problem. It crashes on load every time I try to open a drawing.

I was having the same issue, until I held down shift while it was starting up, apparently it refreshed something within autocad when you hold down shift.

It's worth a shot try it out and see if it works..

@matthew.d Thanks for sharing, glad to see quick action towards this issue. I wish a service pack was available prior to the new mac version though. And apologies to my raging, it just seems AutoCAD stops working with new versions right before I need to travel, which is the most critical time for me. Bad luck is no fun :cara_de_decepción:

I've look at Autodesk Knowledge Network article for an update about El capitan vs. Autocad but I've noticed that it's only for Autocad 2014 or 2015. As an owner of a 2013LT license does it means that I will have to buy another license ?

Could you give us a date for the compatibility because I want to have all the benefits of El Capitan installation as soon as possible.

Thanks.

2013 LT was barely updated to Yosimite.  In fact I bought mine through the MAC app Store and it wasn't updated for Yosimite.  For other OSX releases they have even dropped support for one year prior.  I bought 2012 LT and OSX MAvericks was released 6 months later and was never made compatable.

So if you have 2013LT you will need to keep Yosimite or buy new Autocad.

I now reccomend getting VMware and running virtual windows and running autocad in that.  You will save money in the long run as you will only need to upgrade VMware every 2 years.  I have a co worker who bought Autocad with windows XP and it still installs in Windows 10 with no issues.

I suspect that the incompatability of new OS with young (1 or 2 year old) software is a way to make $$ or force people into subscriptions. I suspect this because the only thing that keeps my ACLT 2013 from installing in Yosimite is that the installer isn't compatable.

AutoCAD for Mac 2015 is compatible with Mac OSX Yosemite (10.10). AutoCAD for Mac versions 2014 and earlier currently are not compatible with Mac OSX Yosemite (10.10). These versions may launch, but will not operate properly and damage to your project data could occur.
We strongly encourage you to carefully check operating system compatibility with your version of AutoCAD for Mac before upgrading your Mac to OSX 10.10 (Yosemite).

Autodesk plans to release service packs for AutoCAD for Mac 2013 and AutoCAD for Mac 2014 within several weeks after the Yosemite release that will allow those versions to run on OSX 10.10 (Yosemite). When a service pack is released for your version, you'll receive notice in the Mac OS Notification Center. Availalbe service packs are also posted on the AutoCAD for Mac support pages here:

Why upgrade your system when you know that it will not run your app?

Downloaded OS X El Capitain a few days ago. AutoCAD hasn't worked since. It opens, but the moment I try a command it shuts down.

I run AutoCAD LT 2013 for Mac.  I updated to Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) and every time that I open my layer manager AutoCAD crashes immediately.

Is there a fix for this?

BUT I have reinstalled Autocad Student 2015 by redownloading the .pkg file on Autodesk and it is working well with El Capitan. I tried opening new .dwg files and tried exporting it in PDF and no problems occured.

With an iMac 27" mid 2011 - Intel core i5 2,8Ghz.

Hi,

Interesting...
Have you installed Updates to AutoCAD after you reinstall it?
Are you able to edit Multiline Text by double clicking on it without crash?
