AutoCAD 2018 for Mac won't open and crash without internet connection

Hello AutoCAD community,

I'm reaching you today becauseI'm encountering some issues with AutoCAD 2018 for Mac, tried to reach the support team a month ago and still had no answers unfortunately.

Well let's start with a bit of context. As part of my education I have to work with AutoCAD and for that I signed-up to an education license with who I downloaded AutoCAD 2018 for Mac. Installation worked like a charm, started to work with the software no issues at first glance. Then I went to school with my MacBook to follow the class with and to my surprise AutoCAD did not start and crashed. I thought maybe it was related to my installation so I went to my Autodesk account page and figured out there was an update 2018.2 that I installed. Still same issue when I was in class and then I realized that it was related to the network cause I don't have any network in class when I'm always in WiFi at home. Several test confirmed the issue and I tried the different things proposed by Autodesk or tips found here. I Ended with full clean uninstall and reinstall using the 2018.2 installer but well still doesn't work.

Let me explain the exact steps :

- Open AutoCAD 2018 for Mac.

- Small loading window.

- Welcome window where I can select a file format or switch to learn or extend.

- Select a file format let's say acadiso for the example.

- The menu appears with File Edit View Insert etc...

- Stay stuck with only the menu at the top, no windows at all and the spinning wheel endlessly spinning...

My equipment is a MacBook Pro 2018 running on Mojave.

I'm not sure where to start or where to continue to resolve this issue...

By advance thanks a lot for whom is going to help me in my distress call

Hi @thomas_dc,

This is the first case that I have heard of with this product version on Mojave.  I would like you to try a Reset (hold Shift down while starting AutoCAD) to see if this corrects the issue or even a complete uninstall and reinstall of AutoCAD 2018.2. I will also consult with some resources on next steps to take to resolve this issue.

Thanks for your patience and please let me know your results.

Please select the Accept as Solution button if my post solves your issue or answers your question.

Hi Thomas,

Can you try to use this solution:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/autocad-a...

or at least verify that hosts file on your Mac is correct.

Hello @maxim_k and @john.vellek

Thanks for helping!

@maxim_kI double check my Host file and it seems not grayed out, not equal to 0kb and having the right content. I put a screenshot to be sure we are on the same page.

@maxim_kI performed several reset and uninstall reinstall and did not help. I will give it a shot again this afternoon.

I did a short screen record to show what is going and during the edit I noticed after several minutes without internet that AutoCAD is launching the window without interface inside. Then after few minutes the interface comes. Tried to use it but every action or tool selection or key press is followed by a spinning wheel of 10 seconds minimum.

Thanks again for helping into this weird bug quest.

Does it work normally if the Internet connection is stable? - I see it works.
Does WiFi on your Mac is turned on when you launch AutoCAD without Internet connection?

EDIT: Oops, I see that WiFi is turned off.

Then - have you tried to leave WiFi ON even if there is no WiFi hotspots and you know that Internet will not be available?

Yes, AutoCAD is working properly if an internet connection is activated so
far. The issue is that is not working properly and crashing when there is
no internet connection.

Please see the video to understand the behavior of the software with and
without internet connection.

Thanks a lot

EDIT: I tried what you suggested WiFi on but outside of any network range. Unfortunately still the same behaviour.

Do you have file sharing enabled in Sharing pane of macOS System Preferences?
If no, then enable it, restart your Mac and test your scenario.
If this will not help, then - sorry, I don't have any other ideas for now, maybe except of ... reinstalling whole system.

@maxim_k

File sharing seems to be the trick. Tried to open AutoCAD with File sharing checked and it works so far. I'll see if it stays stable during the next days.

Could you explain to me why I have to do file sharing to have it working please ?

Thanks a lot

Hi Thomas,

>>>>>Could you explain to me why I have to do file sharing to have it working please ?

A few months ago there was complaints here on the Forum about freezing (hangs) in AutoCAD for Mac here on the Forum. This solution:
https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad-for-mac/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticle...
sometimes worked for some, but not all, users.

That time I've made some research and have found a mention of the trick with "file sharing", which helped to someone to resolve hangs.
Unfortunately I cannot remember where I have found the description of this trick.

@maxim_kI did not found this topic during my research, what a pity.

Well, even Autodesk themselve have no idea why this issue is occured "The reason for this condition is unknown at this time".

Thanks a lot for your help, I'm really happy to be finally able to run AutoCAD after months of issue.

Hope this topic can be useful to the next person encountering this issue :cara_guiñando_un_ojo:
