Autocad 2016 Mac, will not respond after extended idle time.

Mac Autocad 2016, fully updated.

Fresh start-up of the mac and Autocad will open and run fine.

I usually leave my mac on overnight with autocad running.  My mac sleeps after a given time.

Return the next day and autocad is unresponsive.  Autocad shows as running in the doc but will not appear on the screen.

If I quit Autocad, let the mac sleep overnight, then return the next day....  Autocad will not start but will show the little dot under the program in the doc.

If I force quit autocad it will not start again.

This happens 75% of the time I leave my mac on overnight.

I have to shut down my mac each day in order to rely on autocad opening when I need it to work the next day.

This only happens with autocad, no other programs.

Thanks in advance! :cara_con_una_leve_sonrisa:

Hi,

Which Mac do you have? Is it desktop or Macbook?
I don't have such problems with Macbook Pro - I can close the lid when AutoCAD is running and a lot of drawings opened in it and when I open the lid next day - I can continue to work without any troubles.

I run 16' Autocad  on my Macbook pro and my iMac.  No problems on the macbook, only issue is with the iMac.  If I leave autocad open with an open dwg  I can return to it the next day without issue.  The issue is when I close a drawing, minimize Autocad, then try to maximize or open a dwg the next day.

If all drawings were closed and you pick AutoCAD icon in the Dock - Welcome screen should open with 'Create" tab active.
Welcome screen in AutoCAD is highly sensitive to the Internet connection.
Could it be so that Internet connection is not very stable or is broken after iMac waking up?

Internet connection is always on and reliable.

After I wake up the mac, let it fully load, then pick Autocad in the dock (which has the dot below it to show it's already open)...nothing happens, no welcome screen or create tab.

I have waited up to 10 minutes to see if it will finally wake up, nothing.

If I force quit autocad at this point it WILL NOT open up again.

It's at this point I have to restart the computer.

If I don't force quit Autocad before restarting I do get a notice telling me to quit Autocad before shutting down.

Very strange.  Autocad works flawlessly otherwise.

What if you will leave one drawing opened in AutoCAD before your Mac goes to sleep? Later it be new empty drawing.
Can you use AutoCAD after wake up?

^^^^^I believe it's fine if I leave an active drawing open but I'll double check and get back to you in 24 hours.  Thanks!

Hi @Anonymous,

Next time when you see AutoCAD freeze, could you please open the Activity Monitor, see if AutoCAD 2016 process is in red, and labeled as not responding?

And in the Activity Monitor, please double click the AutoCAD 2016 process, and click Sample button, save the sample file and send to me at: wei.ma@autodesk.com.

Thanks,
Wei

Hi Wei,

Don't you think it is Welcome screen issue?
When no drawings opened and AutoCAD is running, picking on AutoCAD icon in the Dock should open Welcome screen.
Looks like in OP case it either hangs or opens, but it is not visible on the screen for some reason.

Hi Maxim,

It could be Welcome Screen issue. But if AutoCAD is already hanging for some reason, then it is less likely to be due to Welcome Screen, as AutoCAD does not accept any operations when already hangs.

The sample file can tell us more of what AutoCAD is busy doing at the moment.

Thanks,
Wei

Hello @wei503,

Last night I left a file open and running on Autocad, then minimized it.  I arrived at my computer this morning and had no issue opening up the minimized running file.  So, step one was to see if that caused an issue, which it did not.  Tonight I will close all drawings but keep Autocad running, then minimize it and walk away for the evening.  I'll report back tomorrow.  Next time it hangs up I will follow your instruction and get you the requested file.

Many thanks,

Brandon

Well I have tried and tried to recreate the issue I was having over the past 2 weeks and so far it's running perfectly.  Of course this is what happens when you reach out for help!  I will chime back in if it happens again.

Many thanks to all!
