The default template file pointed out by ramesh.kambang only affects the command QNEW. The little tab with the + on it starts a new drawing using a different command, and it defaults to the last template used.

If you want it to default to a different template, go to the START tab in ACADE, go to 'Start Drawing', and choose a template file from there. That one will become the new default when you create a new drawing using the + tab.

Alternatively, if you have a company or personal drawing template, you can use your default drawing template by adding the path (via browse) as shown marked in RED below

ramesh, FYI, that path tells ACADE which folder to open up so that you can pick a template file. It won't 'default' to a particular template (although it might, if there were only one template in that location). This path only shows the contents of a folder.

There are two commands to start a new drawing in ACAD: NEW and QNEW. As we've covered here, the QNEW command allows you to assign a default template, via OPTIONS. The NEW command will give you a dialog box to choose your template from.

The + tab is a hybrid of the two. It is based on the NEW command, but instead of offering you a dialog box for choosing a template, it just uses the last template you asked for.

As far as I know, these are the only ways to start a drawing. Only the QNEW method gives you the option to have a default template. And ACADE doesn't appear to start drawings with the QNEW command.

Thanks Jim for detailed explanation, I really appreciate your time and effort! ACADE members can learn new tips and tricks from your posts.

I have following setups in my acade:

  • In the Drawing Template File Location – I replace the default acade directory with my (or client’s) drawing template (dwt) file location directory. In this location my (or client’s)  template file (dwt) is saved.
  • In the Default Template File Name for QNEW – I replace the default acade directory with my (or client’s) drawing template (dwt) file location directory. In this location my (or client’s)  template file (dwt) is saved.
  • In the Default Template for Sheet Creation and Page Setup Overrides – I replace the default acade directory with my (or client’s) drawing template (dwt) file location directory. In this location my (or client’s)  template file (dwt) is saved.

Whenever I click + or type NEW, it will open my template drawing or offers to select only my template (there won’t be acade default template to choose from). Another benefit of doing this is - during BOM creation (really long BOM, on several sheets), acade selects my template (rather than acade default template) add required sheets automcatically to my project tree. If I didn't have these setups, acade would have selected default templates to create and add new sheets to my project tree.

It really depends on how the operator wants to setup the acade. I did this way because it really saves time and I am not interested in acade default templates which are not suitable for my use.
