Item Numbering Standards

I have always manually set my item numbers in my schematics, I do it starting from sheet 1, which becomes item 1 and then go on from there. I have learned over time to leave some blank spaces, ie if I stop at item number 11 on sheet 1, I will start using item number 20 on sheet 2 so if anything ever gets added on sheet 1 I have space to give it an item number that makes sense with the originals.

I see that if I use the ACADE feature of automatically resequencing the items numbers it does it in alphabetical order by manufacturer, is that the 'standard' throughout all of the industries that use ACADE?

How is the situation handled that could inevitably arise when you have to insert another component within the schematic and all of the components in the schematic have items numbers assigned to them? Example, you add a component to manufacturer A that’s in the drawing set already and their previous components item numbers where 1-8, then manufacturer B components item numbers went from 9-15. The new item you added belongs to manufacturer A, so it should then become say item 9, but that’s already taken by manufacturer B. What happens then?

There's no standard for this. Do whatever works best for you.

I your case I see a different problem. What if you need to add another page or two? What if you need to move a device from one page to another?

I recommend using the tools you have in your ecad software to your advantage to keep the manual workload down.

You can do what you want with the item numbers unless you actually label your components with it when you build the panel.

I'd say that item number should only be used within your drawings.

Thank you.

Is it me or is the exporting and importing process when working with changing the item numbers in excel a bit confusing?

By that I mean everything must stay in the exact same format or else the import doesn’t work. Even if I hide some columns in excel to make it easier to modify what I want to I need to make sure to unhide them before I save and then import back into ACADE.
